I've been doing the simple legs crossed that we were all taught in elementary school.  I believe it is called "Half lotus"?

I'd like to see what the most effective and comfortable stance is when meditating, particularly for westerners.

I advice you to not have your legs constantly crossed; I've found that (I was doing that for... eh, years... always having my legs crossed when meditating) this position creates some sort of... how to say this... it's like there's a rope around your legs and it does not allow the energy to flow freely. I am telling you because I was doing this for years (because it's comfortable!). You can sit however you like, but don't have your legs constantly crossed. Personally, I also like to support my back on the wall (sitting) and have my legs extended.

Sitting in a chair or anything like that that you find comfortable. There's no specific thing, it just depends on what you find comfortable. No, crossing your legs isn't recommended at all though, not only is it uncomfortable but it also blocks the energy flow to your legs.

I'm pretty sure you can be in any position you like. Even a chair or lying down, heck you can stand too if you want. Though I prefer the Lotus myself as that just works for me.

But having your spine straight is definitely a must for alot of specific things. Just do what your comfortable with, read the JoS website for more specifics.

I think it depends on the person meditating...i believe meditation requires comfortability for relaxation. When i meditate i always lay on my back...because that way i can relax better...
I only sit when its required!!!
SO I belief the more the relation the better the medition.
Its not necessarily the sitting position but the relaxation

What position one feel is most comfortable is all individual.
Some people like you like to sit with their feet crossed, some like to lie on their back (on the floor, couch, bed etc.) and some people like me, like to just sit in a comfortable chair, where I naturally can relax my back and keep it straight. And just place my feet on the floor, and to be relaxed so I can focus the best way I can.

Sometimes, I sit on the toilet, or the floor myself, and even sit on my bed with the feet crossed. It is all individual.
Some people even like to stand on  their feet with their spine straight.

Though, if you sit with your feet crossed, the energies may get stuck in your feet and cause uncomfortable and annoying pain or feelings in the feet. This will be released if you direct the energies from the feet up in the base and up the spine and out the crown. Or running, jogging (exercise).

HAIL SATAN!

Any stance that feels comfortable for you is fine, although when you are meditating on your base chakra I think the legs crossed position is ideal. I don't exactly know where the base chakra is when you're standing up.

the best meditation pose for me is lying on the bed (most comfortable and relaxed)
sitting with your spine straight for 15 minutes can cause alot of strain and you should be totally relaxed when meditating...

I liked to lie straight down on the carpet, or wherever personally. Fortunately, I developed a way to keep from falling asleep.

I find that Prana flow is best that way.

Thanks a lot everyone!

Really helpful info.  As you can see I'm new to this and meditation was in my mind synonymous with the eastern monk sitting with his legs crossed. hahahaha.  glad to know there are (better!) alternatives.
