Hello, I’m having some difficulty understanding the posts about gods and beliefs in the Temple of Zeus, particularly those discussing the Zevist doctrine regarding the afterlife and other similar topics.

My main difficulty lies in determining the most appropriate way to interpret these posts. Should they be understood literally, or are they intended to convey symbolic meanings? I generally tend to interpret them symbolically, but certain details make me question whether this interpretation is correct.

I would therefore like to know what criteria I can use to distinguish between literal and symbolic meanings and develop a more accurate understanding of what these posts are intended to convey.

I would appreciate it if anyone with previous experience or knowledge of these beliefs could guide me toward a better understanding and share any advice or clarification that might help. Thank you in advance.

I believe symbolism is used as a tool to help describe literal realities pertaining to the afterlife. For example, with About The Afterlife: The Four Domains Of The Afterlife, in regards to the descriptive imagery typically used for Elysium / the Elysian Fields, it says:

All of the above language is symbolic, as the Ancients used simple terms to illustrate that high-quality souls would eventually attract and receive favorable conditions in their afterlife.

I interpret this as the symbolism helping to show generally what will be experienced rather than specifically. This would also make sense for things like the descriptions of what the initiate will experience at death given in the Orphic Tablets and the Myth of Er: while there are differences between what they each describe will happen at death, the overarching idea each conveys is the same. The imagery is used to make complex realities be understood in a more easily digestible format, yet they describe real mechanics of the afterlife, is how I understand it.
