http://nitaaiveda.com/All_Scriptures_By ... _Loud_.htmThe superior power ofmanasic-japa could is ever so stressed as it endlessly recurs in severalscriptures. The benefits of silent chantingare proclaimed throughout the ancient scriptures.
"Upamsu-japa (soft whispering, inaudibleto others) gives a reward one thousand times more than Vaikhan-japa (verbal orloud enough to be heard by others; not shouting). However, manasic-japa (silentmental chanting) gives a reward tea million times more than loud chanting. In the digdarsini tika to Hari-bhakti-vildsa,Sri Sanatana Gosvami says:

HOWEVER, reading further throughthe website (which I suggest you do, too, in order to have a just take on thissubject).... "If silent chanting(manasic-japa) is so incredibly powerful and beneficial, why do contemporarygurus advise their disciples to chant softly (upamsu-japa) or loudly (yaikhari-japa)?"The answer to this question comesfrom the life and teachings of Haridasa Thakura, who is the Namacarya for allGaudiya Vaisnavas. Of the 192 rounds of japa that Thakura Haridasa chantedeveryday, it is said he chanted 64 in the mind, 64 whispering, and 64 loudly. Fivehundred years ago in Navadvipa, the local smarta brahmanas criticized Haridasa Thakurafor chanting japa loudly. They said: "Haridasa, whymust you chant so loudly? The actual injunction is to chant softly in yourmind. Which scripture instructs you to chant loudly?"Srila Haridasa humbly replied:"The principle effect of chanting the name of God loudly is that itpurifies the soul one thousand times more than any other form of worship.Nowhere in the scriptures is loud chanting of the holy name condemned; on thecontrary, there are excellent benefits that have been described in many places. In one scripture it says: 'Loud chanting of Lord Krsna's name is a thousandtimes better than silent chanting.'"''Why is the result of loudchanting magnified a thousand times over any other process?" demanded adubious brahmana.Haridasa replied: "Obrahmana, please try to understand that when any living entity, be it man, birdor beast, hears the holy name chanted by a pure devotee, he goes directly toVaikuntha after leaving this body. Srimad Bhdgavatam 10.34.17 says, 'O Acyuta, anyone who chants Your name purifies all who hear his chanting, as well ashimself. One who chants the holy name to himself liberates himself only, butone who chants the Lord's name loudly liberates anyone who hears him. The soundof the Lord's name is beneficial for everyone.'"Haridasa Thakura continued,'Therefore, all scriptures assert that loud chanting of the Lord's name is athousand times more effective than any other religious process. Before stating my ideas, here isa brief glossary:* shamanic magick = magick thatfocuses on the self (aura or chakra programming)* sorcery = magick that focuseson others/one's environment* vaikhan = loud japa* manasic = silent japa, in themind only My comments && points onmantra and magick:* Vaikhan japa is said to beweaker than manasic japa. I think it's because the energy from the vaikhan japais spread out in all the dimensions physical, mental and astral -, instead ofconcentrated on the mental body.* However, it may be that vaikhanis more effective for sorcery than manasic - because vaikhan mantra is ALREADYMANIFEST IN THE PHYSICAL same as how sorcerers aim to create change in thephysical using magick.* On this same point, it may alsobe that vaikhan is purposed more for self-development than magic.&&* Though, to contradict the abovepoints: following the idea that vaikhan and manasic are equally powerful it'sjust that vaikhan is evenly spread between the dimensions - the fact thatmanasic is extremely powerful and concentrated compared to vaikhan could makeit manifest results better.* Also, the physical and mysticaldimensions are inseparable, therefore making manasic not only moreenergetically powerful than vaikhan, but also more effective in magickalworkings. Oh, I should stop.I'm already beginning to confusemyself.Mercury must truly be inretrogade.
