Sometimes trying too hard, or even trying to recapture a particular feeling or sensation experienced during meditation can be distracting to a point where instead of Meditating with a free and clear mind one is consumed by prior thoughts and feelings. A lack of a particular sensation does not necessarily mean it is not working the same, only that it is a separate experience and therefore is accompanied by a separate sensation. There are many factors that can cause these fluctuations in consistency.
All of us experience distraction, and our surroundings are perhaps the most obvious. I have lost count of how many times the phone has rang, someone has knocked on the front door, the dog has barked, a plane flew low over the house etc, etc, etc. These are random and uncontrollable distractions and they happen to us all. The discouragement you are experiencing is perhaps a more controllable distraction, one of your own making born from expectation.
The most important thing with Meditation is to have Intention not Expectation, couple that with a Clear mind free from distraction and you will start again to feel the rewarding benefits.
The first couple of times you meditated you didn't know what to Expect correct?
