I've tried this and it's extremely hard for me
I've tried many times, but I can't do it and when I make any progress, my mind gets excited and my imagination tends to take over

is there any other way?

Takes practice and persistence. It really is frustrating at first but I can assure you it gets better with practice and patience.

Incidentally, recurrent dreams can also offer hints to past lives occasionally. I, for example, often have a terrifying one where I am trapped in what seems to be a collapsing mine. I think this might refer to an untimely and frightening end of an earlier life which left a large impression on my soul. Moral of story? I need to explore it in greater depth when I'm not so busy with other things.

I have explored several of my past lives (by no means all) and at first it can be very annoying that just when you think you're getting some worthwhile information the enormity and wonder of what you're doing hits and, as you say, your imagination takes over and you invent all sorts of other scenarios. Incidentally, some of them may NOT be invented but it's usually good to err on the side of caution. But just try to relax through these exploration sessions, content to get a little or a lot of info, or even sometimes nothing. Always be open.
