Name changes effect on the person

Hello, I have a few questions concerning names. Numerology deals with names, family names etc to determine things. Also on a more basic level names have meanings.
Would changing your name or family name have a deep effect on the person's future outside of a mundane level ?
What if you not only changed your name formally but internalized the change in yourself (is that fully possible ?!) ? Which name will become relevant for numerology purposes then, the original name or the new internalized one ?
