I looked at my hand from different angles, I don't think the thumb looks bad, it could be from a lower angle. It you move thumb & pinky near each other & look, you'd see what I mean.

I get what you mean. Although, I planned now to check the basics of drawing anyway, even thought I didn't seriously consider learning to draw, the basic concepts will be useful one way or another.
I was also proud of the peacock, but I wasn't sure about the rest of the drawings, especially Lord Horus and Lord Anubis, so I was wondering whether to post them. I remember using references from hieroglyphs etc., but probably went too far with the colours and I didn't know how to draw a jackal. Although it still looks better than my first drawing of Lord Anubis made many years ago.

One more thing, you don't have to worry about the eyes too much, especially since this would be likely a small area to work with. (I was vaguely describing something far too hyper-realistic, my apologies).

You don't give yourself enough credit! These are outstanding and I can tell that a lot of time and work went into them. I've done some art in the past and one of my struggles in some of my art has been not completing pieces as I get bored and wish to start something new and (possibly) better. I'm a person who jumps from one thing to the next and lately I've been mostly stuck on wanting to be a musician someday.
To start something and see it to the end, this takes great patience and resolve! You've really inspired me with these! You have a beautiful depiction of Astaroth as well. Did you use any reference photos or anything for it? If not, that's just that much more impressive since drawing people is very challenging.

One small tip might be to gradually add some more darks (almost black) in tiny areas for better contrast. Also, for better dimension, it may help to try visualizing where the light is coming from. In this case it looks like a upper-right straight-on kind of an angle, so it might be best to remove a bit of the shading at the top-middle part of the forehead and the bottom-right part of the jaw with some highlights around the middle part across the chin. Also, just a bit of shading on the white parts of the eyes (very light and narrow on the left with a bit less on the right and an even smaller touch on the top and bottom) might also might help things to pop out more. Some light on the cheekbone areas might help with some shading coming out from below the inner-corners below the eyes (more on the left than the right) might add more structure, along with shadows cast from right-to-left (from the hair and nose). I'd recommend not going right to the eye though (just barely below it) leaving that round shape of the lower eyelid whereupon you could add darker shading followed by absolute light going upwards.

To get a rough starting point I like to draw in faint lines where I think the shadows should go and work from there; in this case, two narrow sidways triangles pointing away from the nose that curve along the bottom (for the cheekbones) and the top (for the eyes) with the bottom part forming a long narrow point alongside the bridge of the nose. It's all about trying to see the shapes and topography.

Don't worry about criticism, even harsher ones, I would never be offended by it.

You are correct, it takes me several days to draw one drawing (with breaks, of course.). Peacock especially trained my patience here with his feathers. I had to leave my desk a few times to cool down and to be able to finish it. And I had exactly the same problem as you. I would start drawing and then leave it unfinished. I can't count how many drawings I abandoned to start a new one, which I never finished either. It's because I was impatient. Now, when I draw for too long and I lose concentration, I leave the table and continue when I regain energy and inspiration. Honouring the Gods in this way is also a good motivation to finish your work. :D

As for Lady Astarte drawing, I used the description from the website and I admit that I used the reference for the eyes. I'm simply not trained to draw women, and the eyes are my weak point. I just can't draw them. The rest was just my intuition.
For your next question, I used colouring pencils.

As for your advices - I had copied your words into my notebook, thank you a lot for them. It probably took you a long time to write this, and I appreciate that. Next time, don't worry about giving me a criticism, just go ahead! I always take such words into account to improve myself.

So based on what you wrote, you had been creating arts too. Were you a hobbyist or did you learned it? Now I'm curious what your works could look like. Maybe one day you would be convinced to present your art on the forum? Perhaps it doesn't have to include drawing (if you don't do that any more), but in the musical sphere, since you are focusing on being a musician? Well, I would be interested to see it. :D

Thank you very much, although I have the impression that my scanner slightly washed out colors from my drawings. The colors are more vivid in real life. :)

Posting some artwork is a good idea. I honestly think I should also get back into it. I have some artwork from high school and I took art classes there. After graduating however I gave up a sort-of dream of being a manga artist and got more involved with working and finding a career (something in humanities), in my case ASL (American Sign Language).

After college my interest shifted yet again into more biology and nutrition. It's not something I think I'll make a career out of but it is an area I love to learn about, along with politics and world affairs.

The more I ponder what the 'ideal career' would be the more I realize that we can pave our own path at any time and that it doesn't have to be a singular pursuit like we're told. It just takes focus and to become our own sort-of entrepreneur. I still work in retail and I've (as mentioned) set my main focus on wanting to produce my own music. Thus, having a certificate/degree/whatever in my view doesn't always determine our success, no less our joy - it's how we apply the things we learn in the real world that matters the most.

All things considered I think I can do all these things in some capacity. I think I need to set aside time for each thing (even alternate days/weeks in these areas of focus) while building strong routines rather than going from one single extreme to the next.

Art is a great way to exercise our intuitive mind and to stay inspired. Science is a good way to rationalize things. As much as I felt in the past that my efforts were in vain I've come to realize that it's not about the destination but more about the experience and what we manifest into the world. Balance and routine is definitely crucial there.

I'm glad that my comment helped. Also, it's no worry as I tend to type stupidly fast (years of practice). All good things come in time especially when you prioritize and always set time aside for meditation. Being around animals and nature has also helped keep me inspired.

That would explain your knowledge in this area and the fact that you were able to point things out for me. I suspected that you had encountered art before. To some extent I can understand why you resignated, because becoming a real manga artist is not that easy, especially for a non-Japanese person, if you want for example to get into a big company (though it's not impossible, but difficult anyway). That's when you aim for Japanese companies like Shōnen Jump etc. I am not sure how it works in America, although I suspect they publish English manga there too. I once read what it's like to work in this industry...the salary, competition, terrible schedule (few hours of sleep, lots of time commitment and sacrifices). It's difficult. As for sign language, I had to learn the basics once, but now the only thing I would probably remember is the alphabet. With this drawing, it was my suggestion given the amount of plans you have, but if you ever come back to it and actually want to share your work here someday, I'd love to see it. In general, it's always nice to see a new artist on the forum.

There will always be time, but planning and developing a weekly schedule/routine will help you organize it all and find time for a given activity. The key is to find balance. It's not even about the routine itself, because what we do has to be pleasant for us (such as meditation or yoga), but about well-managed time to be able to perform these activities. Keeping a notebook helped me stay on track and better organized. I had listed activities to do (those related to passions and meditation). It also helped me see that there are no excuses and that there is always time to do something.

That's why I tried to develop these two zones: artistic and scientific. Both are equally important, balance is needed, as you wrote.
