I have yet to attempt to invoke a demon, and would like to know if it is necessary to have a direct purpose for doing so. In other words, is it bad to invoke a demon just to talk to it and be able to communicate with it?

Personally I really really want to invoke a demon, partly because the logic side of me wants me to personally witness proof that I can laugh in the face of all those fools who say demons are bad, but mostly because I feel invoking a demon would be an enlightening experience. I'm fairly inexperienced in the practices of a satanist, and am working on it. However, in consideration of the demon, I believe it would be more tactful to perhaps develop a relationship of sorts with the demon you intend to invoke, for purposes obviously facilitating the comfort of both you and the demon in question.

You can talk to your GD if you want, but you should summon a Demon only if you want Their help. They prefer to be called He/She instead of "it"...

Hail Satan!!
