How to petition the gods for help.

How do I go about asking a specific god for something specifically related to my problems ? I know to do the god rituals, but what do I do after/during that ? At the end of the ritual, do I visualize their sigil while doing void ? Or just empty my mind and feel their energy ? Is there anything for beginner to know, on how to properly petition the gods?
