How do I make a pendulum?

When I have a moment's boredom, I think about what it would be like to practice divination with a pendulum. Does it need a crystal? What else works?

anything on a string. i use an old mood ring from childhood with an old small ink chain. works well.
pretty much anything like a rock on a string works too.
