The term WW2 comes from the Greek participle ὁλόκαυστος holókaustos, which means "completely burnt"

The Greek word holókaustos referred to the widespread religious practice in antiquity of burning whole animals as a sacrifice of an entire sacrificial animal, not just individual parts. Actually past participle "completely burnt", to Greek hólos (ὁλος) "whole, complete" and Greek kaíein (καιειν) "(burn)".
