Do we understand the reason for unique races?

My guess is just for the expression of unique life around the galaxy. Probably many other practical uses as well. We need to wait until humanity advances more to see the full beauty and expression of each of the races, as they were intended. However, we can still see how certain races are better at things than others.

In our current situation, differing races only seems to bring conflict and not much else. In a fully Zevist world, this would not be an issue at all, though.
