Does one have to be extremely flexible for the serpent to ascend?

It's not really so much about flexibility. The most important thing is energy flow through your minor and major chakras. Another very important part is knowing yourself 100% and being able to make yourself have self control.

Not extremely. Just not stiff as fuck, because it will just clog somewhere and destroy someone up. Just this. You do not need be the atheletic type of flexible, but its advisable that you reach your limit so to say. Stiffness is death no matter where.

I see. Because I lift weights. I take the advice Maxine has given me and stretch frequently but still. Haha I guess I just feel like I have to be Mr. Fantastic or something.

You want to get flexible quick?  Join a Tae Kwon Do class.  Trust me, you'll get flexible...and extremely sore in no time.

I lift too, although I'm not giant, BUT I know the stiffness. Just do hatha after every workout and you will be 100% good. It helps in better circulation and muscle relaxation, so you will pack on more muscle and have less soreness not to mention the aditional flexibility and better, healthier feelings. Something to consider. You do a good thing as the more powerful the physical body, the more energy you will be able to take.

I used to be pretty big at 230lbs now I'm at 185. Mostly focusing on strength these days not so much size. I do hatha right out of bed and then hit the gym. I'll probably do some leg stretches afterward.
