I'm currently studying the works of Meher Baba ( a Zoroastrian, and tho those who don't know what that is, it's the ancient religion of Persia where the Farvahar of Azazel is found), and this guy has a teaching that translated to english is "The Five Perfect Masters", and of these masters, one of them is sufi. As to which I've seen the JoS articles even mention a Sufi tradition of the darvish spinners, and the great poet of Iran (Hafiz) is said to have been Sufi. Now what I want to know is Sufi an offspring of Islam or is Sufism totally independent but has been corrupted by islamic teachings?
There are many elements of this practice that intrigue me, such as their meditations, "masts" (members who meditate so much as they appear drunk), and the overall mysticism surrounding it.
