After an informative email from member draikon99, and a direct answer from the best possible supernatural source--Our God Himself--I stand corrected on the matter of demons being "spirits".
The clear answer is that they are gods and wish to be called such by reason of their unique position in the supernatural plane of existence, especially as compared with the general meaning of the word "spirit", which includes a host of supernatural beings.
As we humans have a distinctive place in the vastness of the known universe, so do Satan and his Demons, on a higher plane.
Also, there is the factor of pride to consider, since Demons are powerful immortals who are accorded by Satan Himself the respect and dignity belonging to their individual rank.
