In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A testimony from the light of this testimony: those chosen by knowledge have acknowledged it, so understand that. It is the eternal arrangement in the two connected testimonies with the noble angels and the people of knowledge. This is the testimony of eternity. Whoever understands the secret of these two testimonies witnesses the two kingdoms and what has been deposited in them through the secret of connection with unveilings, and every form reaches him to all the wise realities.
I ask Allah, the Ever-Living, the Self-Subsisting, to make it purely sincere, an accepted charity before my intimate supplication, and to accompany me with the spirit of His reassurance in my turning and my resting place. And to clarify the path for me and for you, and to bestow upon us and you the lights of realization.
Indeed, this merciful lightning, these shining suns, are the paths of the gnostics, the way of the truthful, and the guidance of the righteous toward the sacred presence of the Lord of the Worlds, the Lord of Lords, the Surpasser of causes, the Lifter of the veil, the Inventor without example, the One exalted beyond forms, the Eternal Who has never ceased to be described with the attributes of beauty, the Ever-Present in pre-eternity, the Raiser of the higher realms by His decree and wisdom, the Expander of the lower realms by His power and will. There is no god but He, the Tremendous, the Exalted, veiled by veils of lights, hidden from all secrets, concealed from the pavilions of sights—yet He perceives all sights. His essence is interior in His pre-eternity, and He manifests through His attributes in His eternity. He seeks help through His names in His everlastingness, and He reveals Himself through His actions in His eternity. He is the First in pre-eternity, the Last in eternity, the Manifest in everlastingness. He is exalted beyond substances and accidents, beyond bodies and parts, beyond acting with purposes. Directions and regions do not encompass Him, nor do successive movements of cycles overtake Him. The passage of night and day does not annihilate Him. I praise Him, Glorified and Exalted is He, and everything with Him is in due measure—the Knower of the unseen and the seen, the Tremendous, the Exalted.
I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, without partner—a testimony that accompanies the souls with firmness in the intermediate realms (barzakh). I bear witness that He knows the full count of His creation, the living and the dead, and the measure of deaths and fates. He is the Knower of what has passed and what is to come, the Reviver of the dead after they were dust. And I bear witness that Muḥammad is His servant and His Messenger—the Sun of the religion, the savior of servants from polytheism and humiliation. The one around whose call the orbit of monotheism revolves, whose wisdom’s suns have illuminated, and the stars of misguidance have vanished at his vision. The dawn of monotheism has brightened through his felicity. May Allah send blessings upon him and upon his family with the best of blessings, and be pleased with the verifying truthful Companions—may Allah be pleased with them all—a prayer that elevates them to the highest stations and the loftiest ranks.
As for what follows: Truth has its banners, reality has its order, and souls have their engagement with divine gnosis. The means is sought, and the ability to divide them is granted. Felicity is coupled with the suns of perfection, and eternal goodness is bestowed through the practice of the rites of the Sacred Law. The highest of stations among the lofty ones is the station of the workers, and the highest of those is the station of the verifying guides. There is no station for a scholar in the religion of Allah who does not benefit, just as there is no existence for a soul’s true life that does not benefit. The farthest of people from felicity is the one who belittles the rulings of the religion and neglects the conditions of the verifiers among the people of the Qibla.
When I saw the words of the great ones—how their speech has prevailed and their wisdom has spread in the horizons and their blessing has become widespread among creation—I found that they have authored works on the manipulation of the Names, Attributes, secrets of letters, invocations, and supplications. Some have desired from me clarification of what they have authored and disclosure of what they have stored. I responded, while acknowledging my inability to fully grasp the insights of the righteous predecessors and the verifying guiding Imams, and I asked Allah, through the humility of confession and acknowledgment, to support me with the subtle graces from the spirits of their spirits. Thus, my speech may accord with realization and be articulated with the tongue of verification.
I say: And Allah is the One sought for help and upon Him is all reliance. The purpose of the chapters of this book is knowledge of the explanation of the Names of Allah Most High, and what Allah Most High has deposited in their ocean of various wise jewels and divine subtleties, and how to operate with the Names in supplications, and what follows them from the letters of the surahs and verses.
I have made this book into chapters so that each chapter indicates what it has selected and enumerated of precise sciences by which one may reach the Divine Presence without toil or exhausting effort, and what may be attained through them of the desires of this world and what is sought therein. I have named this book The Great Selected Exemplar, the Lofty Paradigm, the Science of the Sun of Gnoses and Subtle Graces of the Knowers, because of the subtle manipulations and effective influences contained within it.
It is forbidden for anyone into whose hands this book of mine falls to reveal it to those who are not its people, or to disclose it in an inappropriate place. For if he does so, Allah Most High will deprive him of its benefits, and its advantages and blessings will be withheld from him. Do not touch it except while you are in a state of purity, and do not approach it except when you are in remembrance, so that you may attain from it what you desire. Do not use it except in what pleases Allah Most High, for it is the book of the saints, the righteous, the seekers, the aspirants, and the desiring scholars. Be protective of it; do not neglect any part of it, little or much. Let your certainty be truthful and your faith in its realities firm. Actions are only according to intentions, and to every person is what he intends. When you form an intention for any action, believe in it and affirm the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): “None of you should call upon [Allah] except while certain of the response.” And be resolute in your action with soundness, according to his saying (peace and blessings be upon him).
And peace: The supplication of any of you is answered as long as he does not hasten and say, “I supplicated but it was not answered for me.” Beware of considering the response slow. Remain constantly expectant and awaiting it. This sound principle and straight path encompasses forty chapters. Each chapter contains meanings, indications, hidden and manifest symbols. Ponder it with your intellect and contemplate it with your thought
