I've been using the letter u with the oo noise instead of ah, as in 'lure' instead of 'dull'.

I personally used this way because the japanese vowel system seems less tainted than english which has many vowel sound variants all depending in the country you come from.

the japanese is ah-(a), ee-(i), oo-(u), eh-(e), oh-(o).

English is ay (a), iye (i), you (u), ee (e), oh (o)

i was wondering where others stand on this?

U should be used as OO, like in lure or blue or too or flute.

When you say the english pronunciations. There is often a couple of ways a letter can be pronounced depending on other letters. And then there are other words that just completely throw it out the window and are pronounced nothing like you'd expect.

A is pronounced A, but also as Ah. (Ah)parantly, (Ah)commidate, etc.
