The Lioness


A CONTROVERSY prevailed among the beasts of the field as to which
of the animals deserved the most credit for producing the
greatest number of whelps at a birth. They rushed clamorously
into the presence of the Lioness and demanded of her the
settlement of the dispute. "And you," they said, "how many sons
have you at a birth?' The Lioness laughed at them, and said:
"Why! I have only one; but that one is altogether a thoroughbred
Lion."

The King's Son and the Painted Lion


A KING, whose only son was fond of martial exercises, had a dream
in which he was warned that his son would be killed by a lion.
Afraid the dream should prove true, he built for his son a
pleasant palace and adorned its walls for his amusement with all
kinds of life-sized animals, among which was the picture of a
lion. When the young Prince saw this, his grief at being thus
confined burst out afresh, and, standing near the lion, he said:
"O you most detestable of animals! through a lying dream of my
father's, which he saw in his sleep, I am shut up on your account
in this palace as if I had been a girl: what shall I now do to
you?' With these words he stretched out his hands toward a
thorn-tree, meaning to cut a stick from its branches so that he
might beat the lion. But one of the tree's prickles pierced his
finger and caused great pain and inflammation, so that the young
Prince fell down in a fainting fit. A violent fever suddenly set
in, from which he died not many days later.

The Scorpion and the Frog

A scorpion and a frog meet on the bank of a stream and the
scorpion asks the frog to carry him across on its back. The
frog asks, "How do I know you won't sting me?" The scorpion
says, "Because if I do, I will die too."

The frog is satisfied, and they set out, but in midstream,
the scorpion stings the frog. The frog feels the onset of
paralysis and starts to sink, knowing they both will drown,
but has just enough time to gasp "Why?"

Replies the scorpion: "Its my nature..."

The Buffoon and the Countryman


At a country fair there was a Buffoon who made all the people
laugh by imitating the cries of various animals. He finished off
by squeaking so like a pig that the spectators thought that he had
a porker concealed about him. But a Countryman who stood by said:
"Call that a pig's squeak! Nothing like it. You give me till
tomorrow and I will show you what it's like." The audience
laughed, but next day, sure enough, the Countryman appeared on the
stage, and putting his head down squealed so hideously that the
spectators hissed and threw stones at him to make him stop. "You
fools!" he cried, "see what you have been hissing," and held up a
little pig whose ear he had been pinching to make him utter the
squeals.

The Ass and his Purchaser


A man who wanted to buy an Ass went to market, and, coming across
a likely-looking beast, arranged with the owner that he should be
allowed to take him home on trial to see what he was like. When he
reached home, he put him into his stable along with the other asses.
The newcomer took a look round, and immediately went and chose a place
next to the laziest and greediest beast in the stable. When the master
saw this he put a halter on him at once, and led him off and handed
him over to his owner again. The latter was a good deal surprised to
seem him back so soon, and said, "Why, do you mean to say you have
tested him already?" "I don't want to put him through any more tests,"
replied the other. "I could see what sort of beast he is from the
companion he chose for himself."

The Boy and the Nettles


A BOY was stung by a Nettle. He ran home and told his Mother,
saying, "Although it hurts me very much, I only touched it
gently." "That was just why it stung you," said his Mother. "The
next time you touch a Nettle, grasp it boldly, and it will be
soft as silk to your hand, and not in the least hurt you."

The Eagle and the Arrow


AN EAGLE sat on a lofty rock, watching the movements of a Hare
whom he sought to make his prey. An archer, who saw the Eagle
from a place of concealment, took an accurate aim and wounded him
mortally. The Eagle gave one look at the arrow that had entered
his heart and saw in that single glance that its feathers had
been furnished by himself. "It is a double grief to me," he
exclaimed, "that I should perish by an arrow feathered from my
own wings."

The Crow and the Pitcher


A CROW perishing with thirst saw a pitcher, and hoping to find
water, flew to it with delight. When he reached it, he
discovered to his grief that it contained so little water that he
could not possibly get at it. He tried everything he could think
of to reach the water, but all his efforts were in vain. At last
he collected as many stones as he could carry and dropped them
one by one with his beak into the pitcher, until he brought the
water within his reach and thus saved his life.

The Travelers and the Plane-Tree


Two travelers, worn out by the heat of the summer's sun, laid
themselves down at noon under the wide spreading branches of a
Plane-Tree. As they rested under its shade, one of the Travelers
said to the other, "What a singularly useless tree is the Plane!
It bears no fruit, and is not of the least service to man." The
Plane-Tree, interrupting him, said, "You ungrateful fellows! Do
you, while receiving benefits from me and resting under my shade,
dare to describe me as useless, and unprofitable?'

A traveler wearied from a long journey lay down, overcome with
fatigue, on the very brink of a deep well. Just as he was about
to fall into the water, Dame Fortune, it is said, appeared to him
and waking him from his slumber thus addressed him: "Good Sir,
pray wake up: for if you fall into the well, the blame will be
thrown on me, and I shall get an ill name among mortals; for I
find that men are sure to impute their calamities to me, however
much by their own folly they have really brought them on
themselves."

The Bundle of Sticks

A farmer, whose sons were always quarreling with one another, had tried a long time in vain to reconcile them with words. Finally, he decided that he might have more success by setting some sort of an example. So, he called his sons to him and told them to place a bundle of sticks in front of him, Then, after tying them tighly into a bundle, he told them, one after the other, to pick up the bundle of sticks and break it. They all tried, but nothing came of their efforts. Then, the father untied the bundle and gave them the sticks to break one by one, which they did with great ease.

"So, it is with you, my sons," said the farmer. "As long as you remain united, you're a match for all your enemies. But if you are divided among yourselves, you'll be broken as easily as these sticks."

The Wolf and the Shepherd

A wolf followed a flock of sheep for a long time and made no attempt to attack them. However, the shepherd had his suspicions, and for a while he was always on his guard against him, knowing that the wolf was an avowed enemy of the sheep. But when the wolf stayed close to the flock day after day without trying to seize any one of them, he began to regard him more as a friend than a foe. Then, one day, when he had to go to town, he decided to entrust the sheep to his care. However, no sooner did the wolf accept this responsibility then he fell upon the sheep and devoured them. Upon his return, the shepherd found his flock destroyed and exclaimed, "What a fool I am! But this is what I deserve for trusting a wolf with my sheep."

The Herdsman and the Lost Calf.

A herdsman, who had lost a calf, went roaming through the forest intent on finding it. After a long and fruitless search, he made a vow to all the nymphs of the forest and the mountains, as well as to Mercury and to Pan, that he would sacrifice a lamb to them if they would help him discover who stole his calf. Not long afterwards, as he reached the summit of a hill, he saw a lion feeding on the calf. And now the unhappy man vowed to sacrifice a full-grown bull along with the lamb if the gods would only let him escape from the thief's clutches.

~ If all our rash vows were to be granted, many of us would be ruined by our requests. ~

A cock was scratching the ground in a farmyard in search of food for himself and his hens, when he happened to turn up a jewel. Feeling quite sure it was something precious, but not knowing entirely what to do with it, he remarked, "You're undoubtedly a very fine thing for those who appreciate your worth. But I've rather have one grain of delicious barley than all the jewels in the world."

The Fox and the Grapes

A famished fox crept into a vineyard where ripe, luscious grapes were draped high upon arbors in a most tempting display. In his effort to win a juicy prize, the fox jumped and sprang many times but failed in all his attempts. When he finally had to admit defeat, he retreated and muttered to himself, "Well, what does it matter anyway? The grapes are sour!"

Mercury and the Sculptor

Once Mercury wished to learn what men thought about him. So, he disguised himself as a traveler and entered a sculptor's workshop, where he began asking the price of the different statues he saw there. Pointing to an image of Jupiter, he asked how much the sculptor wanted for it.

"A drachma," said the sculptor.

Mercury laughed up his sleeve and asked, "How much for this of Juno?"

The man wanted a higher price for that.

Mercury's eye now caught the sight of his own statue. "Most likely this fellow will ask ten times the price for this," he thought. " After all, I'm heaven's messenger and the source of all his gain." So he asked the sculptor once more what he wanted for the statue of Mercury.

"Well," said the man, "if you give me what I ask for the other two, I'll throw this into the bargain for nothing."

~ Those people who are too anxious to know what the world thinks of them will seldom fetch the price they set upon themselves. ~

The Hawk and the Pigeons

Some Pigeons had long lived in fear of a hawk, but since they had always kept on the alert and stayed near their dovecote, they had consistently managed to escape their enemy's attacks. Finding his sallies unsuccessful, the hawk now sought to use cunning to trick the pigeons.

"Why", he once asked, "do you prefer this life of constant anxiety when I could keep you safe from any conceivable attack by the kites and falcons? All you have to do is to make me your king, and I won't bother you anymore."

Trusting his claims, the pigeons elected him to their throne, but no sooner was he installed than he began exercising his royal prerogative by devouring a pigeon day.

"It serves us right," said one poor pigeon whose turn was yet to come.

The Frogs who desired a King.

A long time ago, when the frogs led a free and easy life in the lakes and ponds, they became disgruntled because everyone lived according to his own whim, and chaos reigned. Consequently, they gathered together and petitioned Jupiter to let them have a king who would bring order into their lives and make them more responsible. Knowing how foolish the frogs were, Jupiter smiled at their request and threw a log down into the lake.

"There is your King!" he declared.

This log made such a splash that it terrified the poor frogs, who dived under water and into the mud. No one dared to come within ten leaps of the spot where it lay in stillness. Eventually, one frog, who was bolder than the rest, ventured to pop his head above the water and watch their new king at a respectful distance. When some others soon perceived that the log was lying stock-still, they began to swim up to it and around it. At last, they grew so bold that they leaped upon it and treated it with the greatest contempt.

Dissatisfied with such a tame ruler they immediately petitioned Jupiter a second time to grant them a more active king. This time he sent them a stork, and no sooner did the bird arrive than he began seizing and devouring them one by one as fast as he could. Devastated by their new king, the frogs now sent Mercury with a private message to Jupiter, beseeching him to take pity on them once more. But Jupiter replied that they were being justly punished for their folly and that maybe next time they would learn to let well enough alone.

Hercules and the Wagoneer

A farmer was carelessly driving his wagon along a muddy road when his wheels became stuck so deep in the clay that the horses came to a standstill. Consequently, the man dropped to his knees and began to pray for Hercules to come and help him without making the least effort to move the wagon himself. However, Hercules responded by telling him to lay his shoulder to the wheel and reminding him that heaven only aided those who tried to help themselves.

~Pray as we may, if we do not learn to help ourselves, all our prayers will go unheeded.~

The Horse and the Loaded Ass

There was once a man who owned a horse and an ass. Whenever he took trips, he tended to spare the horse and put all the burden on the ass's back.

Sine the ass had been ailing for some time, he asked the horse one day to relieve him of part of his load while on a trip. "If you take a fair portion of the load," he said, "I'll soon get well again. But if you refuse to help me, this weight will kill me."

The horse, however, told the ass to get on with it and to stop troubling him with his complaints.

The ass jogged on in silence, but he was soon overcome by the weight of his burden and dropped dead in his tracks, just as he had predicted. Consequently, the master came up, untied the load from the dead ass, put it on the horse's back, and made him carry the ass's carcass in addition.

"That's what I get for my bad disposition!" the horse groaned. "By refusing to pull my own weight, I now have to carry all of it along with some dead weight in the bargain."

~Laziness often results in an additional burden for its own back.~

The Hares and the Frogs​

Once upon a time the hares, driven desperate by the many enemies that compassed them about on every side, came to the sad resolution that there was nothing left for them but to make away with themselves, one and all. Off they scudded to a nearby lake, determined to drown themselves as the most miserable of creatures.

A shoal of frogs seated upon the bank, frightened at the approach of the hares, leaped in the greatest alarm and confusion into the water. "Nay, then, my friends," said a hare that was foremost, "our case is not so desperate yet, for here are other poor creatures more faint-hearted than ourselves."

The Dog in the Manger


A DOG lay in a manger, and by his growling and snapping prevented
the oxen from eating the hay which had been placed for them.
"What a selfish Dog!" said one of them to his companions; "he
cannot eat the hay himself, and yet refuses to allow those to eat

Thinking about using Lapis Lazuli but idk how to clean it as it has trouble with water. Would I use a lunar mantra to purify it/Empower it?

I wonder if it's a good idea to have rituals that curse "holy" jewish places, Like the western wall. Wouldn't that do some damage especially if they're constantly kissing it?

Out of all the times I've sunk, I've never noticed the sun's rays still reach me even in the darkness of the ocean floor.

I see now the pearls scattered about as far the sun will tell and the sharks that drift cautiously among me in my deep-dark waters.

I would cherish my pearls, but I want nothing more than to kill these kings. Those tyrants threaten me in my own waters. I would have my pearls when I please when I'm King of my Seven Seas.

But for now, I kill the Kings in the dark with the pearls and the sharks.
