Consider the phrase "Silence is Golden."
This actually encourages us to be wise to not share too much of the truth with others, so the act of being wise in and of itself is a part of who we are. One can perceive that as acting with an alter ego or being different, but it's simply just an adaptation of who we are around certain people.
It is still us, being ourselves, and it is still us, being wise.
