Hello. I just started Tarot. I downloaded this book: Tarot Plain and Simple by Anthony Louis. When I ask how someone's life is going, if I choose 3 cards, should I interpret all the cards together, or should I limit the 1st card as past, 2nd card now, and 3rd card possible future?

Limiting each card to a different state sounds confusing. Can't I get the right interpretation out of all the cards I've drawn and choose 1 more card for each question about that subject I'm curious about? It seems easier to me this way.

You can assign any meaning to any position and thus create your own lay out. For example, there is rather popular easy 3-card reading I usually use myself too:
1. Situation / problem (Identificator of the issue)
2. Advice how to solve it / best way out
3. Most probable future or the future providing you follow the advice given.

This is as example, you also can use past - present - future.

Or 2 cards reading, if future is not that important because you can change it anyway by following good advice:

1. Situation / problem (key to the issue or why it happened)
2. Advice how to solve it / best way out

Or just one card that just describes the situation in a whole and gives the best way of action shown by the nature of this card or how the issues shown by this card should be solved.

You dictate the Tarot your conditions what positions, what lay out etc. Tarot gives you answer according your scheme of work.

There are no obligations on how you read or pick the cards. You just need to set and decide your mind as you desire, then you can read and interpreate.
Personally, i prefer to look people's past with 3 card, then their life at the moment with 3 card, and their future with 3 card. Also if i seek to get yes/no answers or any advice for my questions from gods, while focusing and mediating on the god's sigil who i seek for his/her almighty answer, i audibly emphasize how i will pick the cards and read.
