What is the opinion of him and his works? I ask out of intrigue for them, but also concern over his background and whether or not his existence was of a Satanic value and nature.

As far as I know the word Sadism comes from his name. And that denotes a person who derives pleasure by watching people suffer. Its the S within the BDSM. I'm not sure if there's anything Satanic in Sadism although I haven't read his books or whatever he wrote about. He might have blasphemed Christianity in his erotic novels which is a good thing. However I don't thing sadism is a feasible human emotion. Its savagery and the lowest of the low. Maybe due to the pent up repressed sexual desires due to Christianity he lashed out like that in an extreme manner.
