My experience, so far, with the 12th house is that, although it can be a house of sorrow, it is also a house of surrender, fragmentation, and reclamation.
Traditionally, this house is where we bury ourselves, all those soul fragments that have been lost to memories and projections. Your worst moments, habits, impressions, and ideas are stored here.
However, the 12th house is also the house of psychic power and ability, yet access to it is usually stifled by the aforementioned elements. Therefore, active work with the 12th house is a process of reclamation through integration. You must not hide from your self-undoing, but face it, regardless of how ugly it may be.
A good way to know when you're dealing with a lost soul fragment is the impression it gives you. For instance, maybe you have a memory of a time when your parental figure neglected your needs, or when a group of "friends" isolated you from their plans. You have that memory, and it hurts. That hurt is unclaimed psychic energy.
In the case of projections, which are more pernicious, it may be that you cannot stand it when someone behaves a certain way (a way not unreasonable). It is not them that you cannot stand, but yourself with respect to the action. This is another example of unclaimed psychic energy.
The same goes for bad habits. The 12th house is the house of secret enemies, and that may be literal, but it is likely the unseen enemy within the Self.
Now, the positivity of the 12th house emerges when, through an arduous process of reclamation and integration, the soul is made whole. Then, the 12th house becomes a house of power through surrender.
Unlike Christian conceptions, surrender here is related to receptivity, like a conduit to a higher power. The 12th house requests your surrender to its waters, where you are carried away, gaining knowledge and wisdom along its path. This is why meditation is so important, as it is a surrender to the Gods, where your power lies.
Meditation is not the only form of surrender. Things like art, music, and writing are also sublimations of this house. Keeping in mind that the 12th house is ruled by Neptune and Jupiter, we can acknowledge what types of things are beneficial to this house in our lives (religion, philosophy, dreams, etc).
In sum, the 12th house may originally be a house of fragmentation and sorrow, but it is likewise the house of wholeness and surrender. It is all in how you choose to respond to its lessons.
