OK, I'm a closet Luddite, an outed dinosaur. How to put a photo up as my avatar? I click on my name and go to "profile." Nothing there. Ditto on "user control panel." Is this an initiation test? Or simply weeding out the maladroit?

That setting can be found in the user control panel settings. There is a list to the left when you enter it and from there you can set the user avatar. Please do not share your personal picture as privacy is of utmost importance on this path.
