Maybe you can make some themes for KDE Plasma. I like either MX Linux or Debian with the KDE Plasma desktop environment.

1. Useful(based: Debian, Ubuntu or Fedora or mixed)
2. Experimental(based: Gentoo, Void, Exherbo or mixed

I think Gentoo would be a bit complex.
I second a Debian or Ubuntu-based distro, but not with the Unity DE. Unity has some controversies over privacy; sending keystrokes to Amazon, etc.
My personal favorite is KDE; it's very modern, has lots of features, yet, it gets the job done. For lighter-weight systems with less resources and power, Xfce is also a good choice.
But, there are many options to choose from.

Debian is okay but I don't mind a rolling release, you'll had less problem with maintaining it and newest versions available on it. Arch based would be the best I think. But again, made user friendly. I can help with feature ideas, design, and such, but I don't really have time and skill to be involved in this more technically.
For example seamless window app emulator integration would be nice as well in which it would be possible to pirate (THEORETICALLY) word and such professional apps (IK some would need gpu pass trough which is outright impossible for some systems but for a starting point non gpu passtrough solution is fine as well). right clicking on a file and have an option to delete the metadata.. etc.
