The physical realm is an extension of the energies of which the universe is composed. It's not so much that livings things have souls but, that souls have a physical manifestation.
E.g., you do not HAVE a soul. You ARE a soul. You HAVE A body.
As Yog said, the souls of different life forms ( I love that term - a form of life) are a different manifestation of those somewhat different energies. Therefore, their souls are different than ours but, they are manifestations, nonetheless.
Meditate upon it and it becomes clearer, while still being beautifully complicated.

Or is reincarnation something that only more powerful souls (like that of human beings) can do? And of course, souls that are more powerful than human beings, like our Gods for example.

My experience with animals is that they communicate telepathically and with emotions. I don't know if they use words. I have read somewhere that they can also communicate with images, but I haven't experienced that yet.
Although one time a crow spoke to me on the astral. They did not use their beak to speak, lol. But they spoke to me in my mind with words. Their voice sounded like rocks grinding together.
