This happens to me as well. If i stare at the picture for about 5 seconds another white copy (inverted?) of the image moves around the black one and I can control it to an extent. Then when i close my eyes i can keep it for a while then it goes away and i somehow manage to bring it back from nothing but after that its gone for good.
Interesting enough, one time i was doing the exercise then had to step out of my room and as i opened the door i saw the image on the floor. I thought that was weird. It disappeared rather quickly.

I also had a lot of trouble with visualization. To the point that I was starting to think that I would never get it. Then it changed.
The pictures that we study is in black on a white background. When I closed my eyes I would see the picture being white on a black background but I could never hold it for more then a few seconds. Then last week while I was studing the picture I started seeing the picture not only as it was in the book but also as I would see it in my mind at the very same time.
It was then that I realized that I was only trying seeing it with my 2 eyes instead of seeing it my third eye as well. (I am sorry I know that I am not explaining this very well) When I closed my eyes I held it for much longer.
I hope this helps.
