Hi,

Are familiars necessary for every Zevist to have or is it something only advanced mages/Zevism need/require to further their progress?

Familiars need to be treated with utmost respect and kept safe and loved and appreciated, etc. (like any other animal, of course).

But how do you know that you need or should get one?

Please, answer the question, please don't go on a rant saying "If you don't know it, means you don't need one!!!" And leave it at that. It does not answer the actually asked question.

I've been a Zevist for years now, but I still don't know, despite the fact thinking of one.

Familiars need to be treated with utmost respect and kept safe and loved and appreciated, etc. (like any other animal, of course).

Familiars are not precluded to advanced practitioners. I've read of Initiates that received their Familiar as a gift by Satan directly after their initiation. Are they necessary? Like all things in the Satanic Path, it depends by the individual. There's nothing that is "one size fits all" in Zevism. How do you know that you need one? Well, is like knowing if you need a romantic relationship in your life or not, only you can know if you need one, by introspection and meditation. If you seek to give and receive unconditional, pure love and affection, to protect and give care and receive the same in the spiritual realm (and even more, as familiars are really intelligent and can teach you very precious thing about life, death, witchcraft and all that there's between), and if you are capable to sustain and give shelter to an animal properly, then you probably can request for a Familiar. It's a unique experience for each and every one of us. In the Evocation Ritual to request a Familiar you can ask for a specific animal of course, but Satan or your GD will know better (they wouldn't send you a Cobra if you don't have the possibilities to keep one, for example). If you're ready to keep one, they will send one to you if you request it, in a form that is more suitable and good for you. If deep down you're not so much good of a person, and you're one of these pepole that are likely to abandon their pets for small inconveniences (as a vacation), then you can request a familiar how many times you want, you will never get one. If you need a Familiar to accompany you in this Path is a question you have to ask to your heart.

But that is literally the answer...

There needs to be clear indication and purpose for having an animal companion. When there is none, there would not be a need. Here we must also differentiate between a need and a want.
