Is there a deeper meaning?

First one Sator looks like Satan / last one Reversed
 
Well, the text is a Sator Square, kind of like a medieval Latin "magickal square" almost.

As for it being carved on a skull, I'm not sure. Maybe it's like a Caput Mortem/Totenkopf type deal? Germany has used that symbol for a long time in one form or another, like the skull and crossbones of the Prussian Hussars regiment for instance.
