I wanted to share something from my recent experience with prayer and the new hymns that were recently made available on ToZ Rituals.
Today I tried using one of the hymns as an opening to one of the prayers I perform regularly.
Only recently have I begun developing the habit of praying to the Gods throughout different parts of everyday life, inspired by the way religious practice was once woven into ordinary life in ancient times. I pray at the beginning of the day, before meals, before starting work or study, before physical training, during an end-of-day reflection before the Goddess Ma’at, before sleep, and on various other occasions. Alongside all of these, I also perform my main personal daily prayer.
In my experience so far, prayers that are carefully composed, sincere, spoken with full attention, and above all come from the heart really do have power. I have felt the Gods answer them in ways I could not always have anticipated. They have also helped me become more consistent, disciplined, and focused in the areas in which I have asked for their help.
The hymns, however, seem to add another very strong layer of sacredness, concentration, and power to the prayer.
I will give one example. Today I used a hymn to Lady Hestia as an opening to my prayer before eating. During the prayer, I found myself entering an almost trance-like state and becoming completely focused on the meal and the act of receiving it. Afterwards, the food seemed to taste noticeably different, and I had a very strong sense that the intention of my prayer had been heard and received.
The intensity of the experience genuinely surprised me. To me, the level of power I felt was almost comparable to some magical workings even.
From my perspective, one conclusion I have come to is that this is perhaps one of the things modern people have largely forgotten: prayer does not have to be separated from everyday life. Ordinary actions themselves can become sacred when they are performed consciously, with genuine intention, and in the presence of the Gods.
Eating, working, studying, training, leaving home, returning safely, preparing for sleep, and many other ordinary activities can become moments of conscious communion with the Gods rather than simply mundane actions.
I am still developing this practice, but so far it has helped me become more disciplined, consistent, and focused, while also bringing the Gods into more and more areas of my everyday life.
I would also like to give my special thanks to High Priest Zevios Metathronos for making these hymns available to us, as well as to everyone else who contributed to bringing this new section to ToZ Rituals.
