Is the chanting process whilst doing a Square the same as Freeing the Soul workings?
For example, do I chant the prescribed number of repetitions for that day, then repeat the affirmation 9x or is a different number used?
Also, how do I infuse the Square with a specific signs energy, such as "Sun Square with Leo Energy" — do I use an affirmation or what? And can you give me a specific example?

Yes you do every magical working by rising, programming and directing the energy. The number of repetition of the affirmation is up to you, you don't have to do the same as much as you vibrated. Oh, I thought the whole point of doing a square was to do it in the prescribed order in the kabballistic square thing.
Will it still be worth doing if I read the mantra somewhat quickly and low volume? Because I don't want to be heard. Will this technically ruin the pronounciation?

You vibrate the mantra as many times and in such order as it is discribed on the page. The affirmation however is up to you.
We vibrate mantras not read it. You could vibrate it on a lower volume, it will still be effective, but it would be good if you feel the vibration from it. So still vibrate it, feel the vibration, but you can do this quietly.

The options are either to perform a square or to perform a mantra meditation without the square as a 'normal' working for as long as one one wishes to.
If you want to infuse a Square with the sign's energy then just start it when it is in that sign.
Don't ever start Sun Squares in Libra [fall] or Aquarius [detriment] however, these are hostile to the energy of the Sun. The same goes for all the other planets.
Be aware that sometimes the sign meaning of any Square can have negative elements. Saturn in Pisces is fine for most things but when it comes to very delicate Saturn matters that require a lot of stability and no added strings, Pisces as a sign can inherently fall short, as it rules deceptions.
