Use the full mantra for a particular planet.

No, use the shortened mantra if you want to use a short version.
Aum is like the beginning and the end, and you would miss everything that is between those two points by only using Aum. This would not work with planetary mantras. In some other cases, Aum alone can be utilized, however.
