I've seen a lot of negative opinions here on the forum about ancestry testing, so how do I find out without doing these tests ??? asking people in my family is difficult as I've asked and many don't know that much about the past.

Try to find the history of your surname. You can also try to find if there are any documents left by your ancestors. There is a possibility that you will find something.
