If 108 is not good to use, what is the ideal number of vibrations one should perform?

HPS Lydia also said elsewhere, I think, that it's okay do 7-day iterations instead of 40-day workings, which is probably why mine still felt effective even though I ended it too soon... At exactly 7 days.

I'm not sure if I misread her, so can someone verify and then I'll probably just do a few smaller workings to cover all my bases before doing more serious, tailored fixes to my problems.

40 is the number of Satan. Therefore, 40 and its multiples are always appropriate. I also like to use 33 and its multiples. I think these numbers may change depending on the work you do. 7 is also suitable as it is the number of our chakras.
The main thing is focus, as long as you do it with focus, a 7-day study can give the effect of 40 days. It depends on your strength. HPS Lydia's article actually explains how numbers like 40-80-90 can affect this study.

I always try to be very concentrated and involve all my physical senses in the visualisation, which I think has helped massively. At first, it was kinda just like a "cinema screen" in my mind that I was watching, which I felt was ineffective and I think most people do it that way as well.

108 is legit to use for cycles, especially when multiples of nines are in question. It's a decent all-purpose number (9 and 108), but numbers like 100 and 111 are better for certain things. There is no 'bad' in a sense as all of this depends on your goal.
