I’ve been planning a Venus square for August 21st for the last month. I also was planning a sun square and I realized I needed to start it this Sunday. Those two squares will end up overlapping shortly after starting the sun. I’m looking into maybe a different square instead of the sun. I’m trying to get switched to 1st shift at my union shop which is going to be difficult.. Would the sun be the only option for this goal. If I was doing two squares would it just weaken both and be pointless?

The Temple's teaching on this kind of thing is pretty clear when you read it alongside the planetary square articles. From Specific MeditationsExternal ↗, the guidance is blunt: "Never spread your energies thin. Work on one problem at a time. The more places your energies go, the weaker they become. Energy should be directed like a laser." Each planetary square builds a focused stream of energy over consecutive days, and splitting your attention between two at once risks watering both down. That's not a hard verdict that simultaneous squares are invalid, but it's exactly the principle that makes sequential workings stronger.
The most directly relevant piece is High Priest Zevios Metathronos's Some Questions About Planetary Squares AnsweredExternal ↗ in the Library of Thoth. That article was written precisely for questions like yours, so read it through carefully before you finalize anything. The Clergy have preserved these teachings because the rules around squares are strict: skip a single day and the working is canceled. Start on the wrong day or hour, and you compromise the build. Running two at once means two sets of conditions to maintain without a single slip, and that doubles the surface area for error.
Now here's the part actually worth your attention more than the overlap question: the SunExternal ↗ isn't really the best square for your stated goal. The SunExternal ↗ rules confidence, vitality, fame, honor, ego, and persons in authorityExternal ↗: bosses, supervisors, managers. It's a great planet for personal recognition and influence, and if part of your shift-change depends on convincing a supervisor to back you, Sun energy can help with that angle. But a union shop shift swap is not really a personal magnetism problem. It's a structural one. Seniority rules, contract language, posting procedures, waiting lists, HR approvals: that's institutional terrain.
The planet that owns that terrain is SaturnExternal ↗. SaturnExternal ↗ is the natural ruler of the 10th houseExternal ↗ (career and profession) and the Temple's planetary rulershipsExternal ↗ list SaturnExternal ↗ as governing career matters, self-control, endurance, patience, structure, authority figures, and "anything that has to do with the Earth." SaturnExternal ↗ deals with the hard, restrictive, bureaucratic realities that a Sun square isn't built to move. If you're trying to navigate seniority rules and an institution that doesn't want to flex, that's a SaturnExternal ↗ job.
VenusExternal ↗ is even further off. Venus rules love, beauty, money, art, harmony, social activities, luxury, and indulgenceExternal ↗. A union shift-change is none of those. Your VenusExternal ↗ square starting August 21 is almost certainly aimed at something else in your life, like a relationship, finances, attraction, or general VenusExternal ↗ chakra work, so leave it alone for that purpose.
A cleaner plan: run your VenusExternal ↗ square starting Friday August 21 as written. Do all 49 days with no skips, Friday starts only when VenusExternal ↗ is strong (Taurus, Libra, or Pisces, never Virgo, Scorpio, or Aries). When it closes, start the SaturnExternal ↗ square on the following Saturday during SaturnExternal ↗ hours, when SaturnExternal ↗ is in a strong sign (Capricorn, Aquarius, or Libra). Check the calendar for the exact window after VenusExternal ↗ finishes, and confirm both dates against the planetary ephemeris before you begin. One focused stream of energy per goal, in the right order, with no internal competition.
Think of it like watering a garden with one hose. You can split it between two beds and give each a weak trickle, or water one bed deeply, then move the hose to the next. Both beds end up healthier the second way. Squares work the same way: one problem at a time, energy like a laser.
When you phrase your SaturnExternal ↗ affirmation, write it in the present tense and cover exactly what you want: first shift, by seniority rules, approved through proper channels, in a way that benefits you and is fair to others involved. Specificity is what makes the energy land where you want it instead of taking the easiest route to some other outcome. After the working is done, put it out of your mind and let it work.
Hail Zeus, and good luck with the shift.

Thank you! That’s was very informative! I was looking into Saturn square but the warning on the website kind of scared me. Seems like it’s saying it has a chance to go badly?? Is this a more risky square to try out?
You can do two squares at the same time, though it is better if they both serve a similar goal. If you only have time for one, pick the square that better reflects your desire. Health, Vitality, Success, Wealth - Sun | Relationships, Beauty, Income, Love - Venus
I’m thinking of just doing the Venus one right now. Then moving onto the gift change at work. Instead of using the Sun I could probably use Jupiter. Jupiter won’t be in the most favorable sign. It will be in Leo for awhile but that could maybe be promising considering Leo could help with the luck aspect. Just probably won’t be as powerful.

I think the Sun may be a better choice for your goal—it is almost all purpose. Plus, you may receive more blessings using the Sun in Leo for employment opportunities, outside of just a shift change. Tailor the affirmation to your goal, but allow room for success, growth, popularity, etc.

What would you think about doing a Saturn square like the other advice I received. That would be a much shorter square to have to accomplish but I’m a little Leary on the Saturn square because of the difficulties explained on the website. Seems like it’s saying things could go very badly? Do you have any experience with trying the Saturn?
