So according to the US Surgeon General, apparently we're all supposed to stop buying face masks, because they don't work, and the hospitals need them as there is a shortage. A complete contradiction. Also he urges the American populace to go get flu vaccines instead... Wow.

The United States’ top doctor has one simple request: Stop buying face masks.

US Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams’ message, posted to Twitter on Saturday, was a response to face mask shortages as people stocked up due to coronavirus concerns.

“Seriously people,” he began, and though it’s a tweet, you can almost hear the exasperation in his plea. “STOP BUYING MASKS!”

“They are NOT effective in preventing general public from catching #Coronavirus, but if healthcare providers can’t get them to care for sick patients, it puts them and our communities at risk!” he continued.

Washing your hands, staying home when sick and other “everyday preventive actions” are the best protections, Adams said. He urged people to get a flu shot, as fewer flu patients means more resources to fight the coronavirus.

The tweet comes during what has become a mask boom. With coronavirus popping up in the United States, some have begun buying face masks as a form of protection, despite the likes of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Vice President Mike Pence saying they’re unnecessary.

And, like Adams points out, if these masks run out, they won’t be available to the medical professionals who are at the highest risk for disease transmission.

Dr. William Schaffner, a preventive medicine professor at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, told CNN the rush to buy masks is a “psychological thing.”

“The coronavirus is coming, and we feel rather helpless,” he said Saturday. “By getting masks and wearing them, we move the locus of control somewhat to ourselves.”

Meanwhile, stores across the country have run out of masks. As for online shipments, many orders have been pushed back.

Well he kind of has a point. Because if a pandemic happens and medical personnel do not have masks, shit is going to get real bad real fast.

But even if he has a point he has no right to tell people to not buy masks.

Also, people being protected and prepared, reduces the magnitude of spread and many more things.

Masks work but the spike in price is insane. Also many people bought them carelessly and in excessive numbers. Jews and others obviously bought in bulk to resell on exaggerated prices and not for self protection.

Also, for the general populace, if people do not follow advice on the letter, which doctors tend to do, these may not help people not contact the virus.

For example the mask may help but if one rubs their eyes or removes the mask forgetting to sanitize their hands, the mask won't help.

If things are also on such good terms and all is under such control, and we aren't going into a pandemic, then why do they panic? Are we withheld of something again?

It only somewhat prevents you from spreading it to other people, not from other people spreading it to you.

If you're gonna get masks get some that actually do something.

I went to the hardware store last week, and I heard someone asking for a construction mask. They said they ran out and they won't get any more for at least 1 or 2 months because the company that makes them, 3M, ran out of them, because everyone is buying them for the corona virus. They ran out of the medical masks so bad that they also ran out of the construction masks too. It is true that the hospitals need them more, because they have to deal with many different diseases and with some diseases a mask is very important. It is not a contradiction to say that masks don't work against corona virus, but the doctors need them, because the doctors need them for many different things.

Also I also realize that the common surgical masks do not really help much in protecting one's self from the virus, but I don't like that he didn't specify at all. As N95 and better masks should actually be good protection for the average citizen.

I disagree. There definitely are better options out there that give better protection, but it's rather extreme to just claim they do "nothing at all". You are still better off using one of those than using nothing at all.

It is not a contradiction to say that masks don't work against corona virus, but the doctors need them, because the doctors need them for many different things.

It is, in my opinion, because he didn't specify. It is completely false and harmful information to say all face masks don't work against the coronavirus. N95 and better masks are effective and citizens should not be steered away from purchasing them for their families, especially by the surgeon general of all people.

I'm not sure if people buy anti-bacterial/viral masks for this or just regular surgical masks. I figure anti-bacterial/viral masks have a layer or layers of material infused with some protection for OUTSIDE threats not INTERNAL threats.

But I know in Asiatic countries particularly Japan and Korea. They purchase them when they are sick. Either way their industries produce a lot of these masks just before the flu season. So they wear them to avoid getting others sick and continuing to work. A surprising amount of Asians in these countries use them to avoid staying at home and recovering. Probably not the best idea to work sick but considering the Asiatic "Arbiet macht frei" attitude they'd rather work sick and avoid contaminating others.

The sheer fact is the surgical masks HOLD the germs IN. This might not mean that the masks are anti-bacterial/viral. So I can see why some of you guys consider surgical masks. Sure surgical masks help a bit but they aren't gonna stop a determined external threat. It's mostly the material thickness preventing things entering or exiting. But it does not contain anti-bacterial/viral infused substances. Remember surgical masks can take a blood spurt if things pop out from the body hence why they use them. I'm sure right after the blood strikes the masks they order a halt to the surgical operation and replace the mask with a new one or a nurse switches it.

I can see why surgical masks might be used but they only serve a purpose during the flu season. Not this virus, this is probably above and beyond their capability. Either way I can see why they would state this but they should have been clear as it's a violation of information.

If they said "Stop purchasing surgical masks as they only work for regular flu", "Purchase N90-100 filtered masks or anti-bacterial/viral masks". But telling people not to prepare is just gonna lead to spreading the damn thing.

I agree that he should have specified. Most people assume medical mask = surgical mask when it is not the case, so everyone has been going out and buying surgical masks and now there wont be any available that aren't overpriced for months. This is a pretty big deal, regardless of the corona virus situation. They are useful in many scenarios as they prevent you from as easily getting others sick as it traps most of it, however not all of it. If you coughed while you were doing surgery on someone and didn't have a surgical mask that is not good whatsoever. They do not prevent you from getting sick, at best SOMEWHAT deter it in short term exposure scenarios however most seem to believe it somehow makes them immune when it is not the case, they simply help prevent you from spreading it to others. People should definitely get masks, but surgical masks are not the way to go.

Like you said though, N95 masks are good protection for the average citizen. Sadly I cannot get them though, my family is the type to panic last second when its too late and even if I did find a job in time the prices are through the roof. ( not above 16 so the jobs available to me are fairly limited. )
