Buddha, also known as Gautama Siddhartha, was born into a Hindu Brahmin family in India approximately between 563 and 480 BC. His life is known for his journey in search of religious enlightenment, which led to him being called Buddha.
Originally born a prince, Siddhartha lived a life of luxury and grew up in comfort in the royal court during his youth. However, at the age of 29, he left his palace to see the suffering of the outside world. During his travels, he witnessed the sufferings of life such as old age, illness and death. These experiences had a great impact on him and led him to embark on a religious quest.
Siddhartha was introduced to philosophical and religious teachings and eventually broke away from Hindu traditions to seek his own path. He eventually achieved enlightenment through meditation and inner experiences. As a result of these experiences, he became an "awakened" or "enlightened" being known as "Buddha".
The Buddha's teachings are structured around fundamental concepts such as the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. The Four Noble Truths explain the suffering of life, the source of suffering, the end of suffering, and the consequences of suffering. The Eightfold Path consists of eight steps: right thought, right intention, right speech, right behavior, right livelihood, right effort, right attention and right concentration, and is thought to lead a person to enlightenment.
Buddha's teachings launched a tradition of religion and philosophy known as Buddhism. Buddha later gained many followers in India and other parts of Asia and contributed to the growth of Buddhism. Today, Buddhism is a major religion with millions of followers worldwide, and the life and teachings of Buddha are central to this religion.
