The president of the Central Bank of Brazil confirmed that the country’s sovereign digital currency pilot will go live this year, Cointelegraph Brazil reported.

The confirmation about the digital currency came during an event on Monday, where Roberto Campos Neto, the president of the Central Bank of Brazil, noted that a pilot CBDC program could go live in the second half of this year.

The value of the upcoming CBDC would be pegged against the national fiat payment system STR (Reserve Transfer System)

The theme of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDC) has drawn the attention of the global central banking community. A significant part of central banks - representing almost the totality of the world GDP - has been studying, exploring, or testing projects and operational and technological aspects of a CBDC system.

Most countries consider that CBDCs have the potential to improve the efficiency of retail payments market and to promote competition and financial inclusion, particularly for population still underserved by banking services. As a matter of fact, the pandemic crisis highlighted the importance of digital payment instruments reaching the most vulnerable and affected segments of the population.

In Brazil, Banco Central do Brasil (BCB) has been tracking the evolution of CBDC discussion for some years and, in August 2020, it created a working group to carry out studies regarting the possibility of a Brazilian digital currency.

CBDC is a Jewish thing, am I right?
More control for the issuer and administrative branches and less freedom for the users.

What do you think? ;)
