There are several forms of Astrology from a traditional point of view. Note that this lesson focuses on Tropical/Western Astrology, which is the continuation of Hellenistic Astrology. Hellenistic Astrology dates back to the Hellenistic era which is the era that followed the conquests of Alexander the Great over much of the civilized world. What followed was a blending of various philosophies and spiritual systems due to heavy cultural exchange between civilizations like the Egyptian civilization, Babylonian, Greek and so on. Astrological knowledge from various civilizations was blended together into a comprehensive system that we are familiar with today when we read birth charts.

The type of Astrology most people are familiar with is known as Genethlialogy or Genethliacal Astrology. This is where you cast someone’s birth chart, also called a “nativity” (an English term for birth charts that has recently fallen into obscurity, derived from the Greek term for birth charts, “genesis”, which means “origin”, relating to one’s birth) and determine their fate and destiny.

The individual whose chart is cast is called the native and the various outcomes were traditionally called “apotelesmata”, a Greek word that roughly translates to “Astrological outcomes” or what we can call a prediction. Genethlialogy is what we call Natal Astrology in modern terms and is basically casting and interpreting birth charts. [1]

A sample birth chart created using JoS-Astro

Another major form of Astrology is known as Mundane, Political or Judicial Astrology. This form of Astrology is very old and goes back to Babylon. Mundane Astrology is concerned with nations, cities and any other geopolitical systems. The interpretations of omens like thunder, eclipses and other natural phenomena was also closely linked with Mundane Astrology. [2]

One can also cast a chart for the moment a country or state was founded (with the moment the official documents declaring it as such are signed) and analyze the chart similar to a birth chart.

The term “Judicial Astrology” was originally a term applied to forms of Astrology that were deemed heretical by the Catholic Church such as Natal Astrology. Other forms of Astrology that were deemed as acceptable were called “Natural Astrology”. [3] [4] Judicial Astrology has come to be used as a term for Mundane Astrology in modern times. [5]

Electional Astrology deals with determining the best time to begin a new venture. The Astrologer determines the best time for a desired outcome for a new venture. It can be a partnership, business, a trip, applying for a job, starting a war and so on. Anything applies.

Electional Astrology is also known as Inceptional Astrology for this reason. Inception means the beginning of something. Another name is Katarchic/Catarchic Astrology, from the Greek word “katarchē” which means “beginning”. This is because Hellenistic Astrologers used this word to refer to Electional Astrology. An example of a simple form of Electional Astrology is found in this page by High Priestess Maxine about choosing the best time for marriages.
https://satanisgod.org/www.angelfire.com/empire/serpentis666/Satanic_Wedding.html

There is also Natural Astrology. It is also known as Physical Astrology. Natural Astrology is concerned with the influence of heavenly bodies over the inanimate natural world. Things like earthquakes, tides, weather phenomena, natural hazards and so on.[6]

Horary Astrology is a branch of Astrology that seeks to answer questions presented to the Astrologer.[7] Typically, a chart is cast for the time the question is asked to the Astrologer since it is taken to be the “birth” of the question. The word “horary” is from the Latin “hōra” which means “hour”. Horary Astrology was popular in the medieval times and was originally called “interrogations”.

There are also several other minor branches of Astrology like medical Astrology which is concerned with health matters. Astrological botany applies principles of Astrology to plants and herbs with regards to things like planting, harvesting and use. Financial Astrology involves making predictions, analyses and investments in the financial world.

One should also keep in mind that not all branches of Astrology are valid. An example is Astrocartography which is a branch concerned with finding the best location for someone to live in based on their birth chart. If you were born in London, the claim is that you just need to find a location where your birth chart placements are rearranged into new house placements and positions in the chart thereby fixing any previous issues in the birth chart.

Birth charts go much deeper and show what is in the soul. This isn't something you can just erase by moving to a new location. One should always keep their mind open and apply their proven knowledge and experience when reading various sources on Astrology.

Just saw this it was very well written and taught me some more new things!
Thank you for that. In reference to the post I started about astrology and death/autopsies etc and investigation, would this have a term as well or is this a particular area of study with astrology on its own perhaps like others? Also, bump :3.

Forgive me if this has already been covered, but what is your opinion on Vedic astrology and the sidereal zodiac? What is your justification for using Tropical over Sidereal?

According to the Tropical zodiac, Antares resides in approximately 10 degree of Sagittarius (of course this is always changing, which makes less sense still since it's a fixed star). The reason this does not make any sense to me is that Antares is one of the most prominent fixed stars in Scorpio with very heavy Scorpionic influences and energies. How can the star which embodies pure Scorpionic energy reside in Sagittarius? It just makes no sense to me.

How is Antares about Scorpio when it's a star associated with impulsivity, optimism and religious themes as well?

Sidereal changes. Even the Vernal Equinox point in these Sidereal calculations has changed, from Krittika (Pleaides) to Ashwini and further on...

Ancient Vedic instructions indicated Tropical is to be used for most purposes that aren't to do with Nakshatras or Great Year concepts. 1 2 3 4

The justification is in every ritual we do here. Try opening your Sacral Chakra or doing a Mars Square on a Tuesday when Mars is in most of Sidereal Scorpio, it won't be anywhere near as powerful.

Antares is the most prominent, brightest star in the constellation of Scorpio. It's the red heart of the Scorpion. How is it NOT about Scorpio?

The Solar oriented Tropical system of 30 degree signs has nothing to do with the observable constellations. The constellations are completely unequal in size and don't even correspond to Sidereal in many areas. Someone born with a planet at or opposite 9 degrees Sagittarius will always have the nature of Antares. It does not change.

Franz Bardon - Sun on Antares.
Martin Luther - Mercury on Antares.
Charles I - Sun on Antares (secret catholic, Bishops Wars, he made presbyterian church the church of England under demands from the Scots, then he got executed by Cromwell).
Rousseau - Mars opposite Antares.
Madalyn Murray O'Hair (freedom of beliefs activist that HPS Maxine greatly admired) - Ascendant opposite Antares.

In the Sidereal system you speak of, Antares at 15 degrees Scorpio (Vrsckha) was never thought to be relevant other than being the start of Jyestha ('Elder one') nakshatra, That nakshatra is said to be about being old before one's time, mentally brilliant, protective, kind, good to one's family etc. The first pada or section relates to being humourous and good with writing. Jyestha is said to be ruled by Budh (Mercury). It has some things to do with Scorpio but what has that got to do with fixed star Antares which is a star about being an impulsive warrior with religious themes?

When I change these to a Sidereal chart all of these are WAY out of orb for the star. I don't see any significant people with themes of Antares at 15 Scorpio either. Some of these clearly have more to do with the South and North Scale and Almach.

What I noticed about Nakshatras is that they are even more accurate when applied to Tropical. Not by applying the Sidereal degrees into the Tropical equivalent, but using the degrees AS Tropical degrees.

Not as in 0-14° Sid Aries (for 1st Nakshatra) = 24° Aries- 8° Taurus (if I'm not mistaken for Tropical)

Instead using 0-14° Aries for 1st Nakshatra AS the Tropical degrees, and completely ignore the 24° Aries- 8° Taurus tropical placement had it been a sidereal translation.

Hope this made sense.

This is something I'm wondering about, because I was brought to the attention of astrocartography by a couple of SS friends who seemed convinced in it's effect.

I agree that the natal chart has the most potency, especially a we empower ourselves, but I like to think that just as progressions could be considered a close secondary layer representing who we are at least temporarily influenced into becoming, that astrocartography would be a more distant tertiary layer over that.

I mean it would be simple to say that moving in general will change outcomes in your life, but I feel like the general astrological signature of that area would sort of tint the lens with which you yourself operate in life, increasing some part of your nature concerned with a sign or planet ruling over that area while doing less to affect and or even diminishing others.

It's okay. I don't want this thread devolving into a sidereal vs. tropical debate. They're both valid for their own reasons imo. I just like getting educated opinions as to why they choose one over the other. I've used both in my days, but tend to prefer Jyotish lately and have gotten a lot out of it. The nakshatra system is beautiful and gives so much more enriching detail to the signs. That being said, accurate predictions can be made using Vedic or Western. The quality of the information in any reading is mostly dependent on the quality of the astrologer from what I've seen.
