Are the dragons real?

The dragon is an allegory for a risen serpent coupled with the wings of the soul, which brings enlightenment and a great deal of spiritual power, it also relates to Satan himself and the concept of the Magnum Opus. Obviously they aren't "real" in terms of being a physically existing creature, but like many things from ancient lore, is an allegory for a greater concept.

In addition to this ,there might have been actual fire breathing dragons in the distant past. There are conspiracy theories regarding this and may also be fossil evidence .

If a creature was predominant in the fire element and spiritually advanced enough to both invoke and evoke the fire, and then balance themselves with other elements it might just be possible, perhaps animals in the Golden Age were more spiritually advanced due to elevated energies of the planet. it would be interesting to see your source on that.
