Sound: Ë
German: Ezck [Eihwaz].
Gothic: Eiws
Anglo-Saxon: Yr [Eoh]
Norwegian: Eo

ANGLO-SAXON RUNIC POEM:

"The Yew is on the outside a rough tree,
hard, firm in the earth and guardian of the fire,
upheld by its roots, sprouts on the stump."

NORWEGIAN RUNIC POEM:

"The Yew is the greenest tree in winter.
It is meant to crackle when it burns."

ICELANDIC RUNIC POEM:

"Bent bow, and frail iron, and giant of the arrow."

EIHWAZ is the 13th Rune of the Futhark alphabet, the 5th of the second Aettir. It represents rebirth through death and is connected to the constellation Scorpio and Pluto. The number 13 is a number of completeness of the Soul, because it symbolises the 13 Major Chakras.

Its translation is 'yew' and like the tree it represents the spinal column. It is a Rune of death, as the yew tree is poisonous and is planted near cemeteries, but it is also a Rune of rebirth as the yew tree is known to grow back even after being cut. It is also a Rune of protection, as its wood is very durable.

The World Tree Yggdrasill is represented mainly as an ash tree, sometimes as a yew or an oak. The yew tree best covers its characteristics as a tree capable of regenerating itself from every wound. Odin hung upside down for nine days in Yggdrasill to gain knowledge of the Runes. As in the Odin myth, EIHWAZ represents the tree, the spinal column and the inverted human Soul, with the upper part pointing to the right (male side, indicating that the male Chakras are at the top) and the lower part pointing to the left (female side, female Chakras at the bottom). The inversion of the Soul is a passage from the Magnum Opus, Odin after hanging himself had to die in order to be reborn with new knowledge. This concept is also represented by the Hanging card.

In the Anglo-Saxon Runic Poem there is an allegory: "firm in the earth, guardian of fire, held by its roots"; this is a reference to the Serpent Kundalini (fire) which resides at the base of the spine (roots) where the Base Chakra (earth) is located. This Rune is very powerful when used to uplift the Serpent.

As mentioned above, it is also useful for creating a powerful protective aura that can protect us from all adversities. EIHWAZ helps to defend us from forces such as negative influences from Planets or Black Magic.

Useful if vibrated before practising necromancy, it helps to connect with the spirit world. The second Aettir is connected to the God Heimdall, the guardian of the Bifrost; EIHWAZ acts as a bridge to the afterlife (Helheim).

Another of its uses is to assist the Mage in regressing to past lives, the addition of ODHAL enhances this effect.

Its main power, however, lies in its ability to trigger profound transformations of the Soul, it is useful for sublimating Pluto's energies and bringing about permanent (positive) change.
People with an emphasis in Scorpio or with Pluto as Ruler or otherwise dominant (even retrograde) feel the effects of this Rune much more strongly and can often go through a difficult and suffering period if you use it to trigger a transformation (also depends on transits). Using other Runes with positive qualities as support helps to limit the negative effects of this type of magical work.

Al Jilwah: Chapter IV

"It is my desire that all my followers unite in a bond of unity, lest those who are without prevail against them." - Satan
