Until finally the time will come when destiny will be fulfilled, when the world will end. Time of Ragnarok, Fate of the Gods. Frosts and blizzards will come first to cover the world with a white shroud. Bold, hungry wolves will join in great herds and approach human dwellings. The sea will rage, the storms will lift the crested waves to the height of the clouds, and then the wall of water will fall on the land, flooding all the plains, reaching to the foothills of the high mountains. People will forget what rights are. Siblings will commit adultery. The son will kill the father, and the brother will cut off the head of the brother. There will be an age of clash of swords and axes, there will be an age of blood and confusion. Warriors will disobey their kings, and worshipers will stop sacrificing to the Gods.

And then Garm barks loudly outside the gate of Gnipahellir, signaling the beginning of the war between the Gods and the giants. At this signal the chains of Fenrir will break, the chains of Loki will break, at this sign the Thurs will form armies, at this sign Jormungand will emerge from the sea and take the shape of a dragon. The guard Heimdall will answer by bringing out the hidden Gjallarhorn horn and blowing it with all his might. Then the Gods, Alf (elves) and einherjar (‘those who fight alone’) will break away from feasts and revels to gird their weapons and go into battle.
Yggdrasill's ash will tremble, but it will hold, for it is not yet time to die.

The dwarves in Svartalfheim and the ghosts in Niflheim will fear Garm's voice and the sound of Gjallarhorn. They cower in fear and stay that way. They will support neither the Gods nor the Thurs, and therefore death will find them cowards.

The Hrimthurs will charge into Asgard from their eastern abode. Where they step, frost will cover the vegetation, and ice will bind the waters. Some of them will sail in the dark ship Naglfar, built of the nails of the dead. Loki will take command of it, and Fenrir will sit on the deck next to him on the deck. The rest of the Hrimthurs will be led by Hrym, wielding a stone shield.

From the south, an entire army of Fire Giants will follow, led by Surtr, with a flaming sword in his hand. They will sail in ships of stone, for wooden ships would burn to ashes from the heat of their bodies. Other Flame Giants will make their way to Asgard through the Myrkvidr Forest, setting the forest on fire. And from the north come the Jötunn bearing stone projectiles. They will climb the Bifröst Bridge. The rocks, unable to bear the heat of the end of the world, will crumble like the branches of dead trees, and the sky will crack like old matter.
Yggdrasill will stagger a second time.

The Aesir and the Vanir with their armed hosts will be waiting on the plain of Vigridr near Asgard. But there will be no battle, for the colorful Bifröst will collapse under the bodies of the Jötunn - the giants will then fall into the sea and onto dry land, drowning and crashing on the face of the earth. Then the Gods will lead their warriors to the island of Vigridr, towards which all the ships of the giants will sail. The final battle will take place there.

Odin will raise his spear against Fenrir, but the huge wolf will only open its mouth, swallowing the King of Gods and the God of Kings. Frigg will cry at this sight. This will be Frigg's Second Cry. But soon Odin's son, Vidar, will come to Fenrir. He would grab the monster's jaws and tear them apart, then plunge his sword into the wolf's heart. He will avenge his father.

Garm, who left the post at the Corpse Gate to join the fight, will jump down Tyr's throat. He would knock Tyr down and then bite him, but he would not be able to get off the God's body - he would see what he hadn't felt before, that Tyr had ripped his whole belly open with his sword. Then he will die.

Beautiful Frey will face Surtr. However, a deer horn weapon is of little use against a flaming sword. Maybe if he had his rune sword, the fight would have gone differently...
So the dead Frey will fall, and the victorious Surtr will look for the next opponent.

The dragon Jormungand will emerge from the sea, and then the dragon Jormungand will land on the ground with a flapping of wings. He will be looking for his old enemy - Thor. The duel will prove so terrifying and long that the tale of it will become the most popular story sung by skalds all over the world. Eventually, Thor will manage to reach Jormungand's head with Mjóllnir - he will crush and split him. But to get the weapon out of the monster's skull, he'll have to get close to the snake. Then he will be engulfed by the poisonous mist coming from the dragon's nostrils. Thor will try to escape, but he can only go nine steps before he drops dead.

Heimdall and Loki will also face each other. They will clash in a sword fight - neither will prove to be stronger than the other - both will fall with their heads cut open. Their bodies will soon be consumed by fire.

There will also be a fight in the sky - Sköll will finally get to Sol and swallow the Sun, while Hati will catch Mani and devour the Moon. Darkness will fall over the world as the stars will fall from the sky and hit the earth, causing earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

The spirits of evil giants and monsters will be cast down to Náströnd, a land of eternal darkness and suffering, somewhere far away, not in or below or above our world. And the spirits of Gods and heroes will disappear. They will fulfill their mission, so they can go and rest.

Among all this, Surtr will be the only one left alive. He will run around laughing madly. From the flames of his sword, everything will ignite - from the dungeons of Niflheim to the meadows of Asgard. Surtr will start a fire that will destroy the whole world and himself - the king of Muspelheim.
The Yggdrasill ash that holds everything in its place will also burn and collapse.

Then there will be darkness and the end.
