This was before the rise of men, even before the dwarves saw the endless corridors of Svartalfheim. The three sons of Burr set about creating Alda from Ymir's body. With his blood they decided to flood the low-lying expanses of Midgard to create seas. But what happened? The giant's gore erupted with the force of a hundred volcanoes and spread in a wide wave all over the world. The ocean burst its shores to engulf every inch of dry land. In those days, the earth was inhabited only by giants, descended from the three descendants of Ymir. And it was they who were wiped out by the flood of their own grandfather's blood. Hence these giants are called the First Generation of Giants. Very few stories survive from those times, so we only know a few names of the Thurs who lived at that time. In addition to Ymir's two sons and daughter, the lore mentions Bolthorn and his daughter Bestla (kidnapped by Burr, mother of Odin, Vili, and Ve) and Thrudgelmir's son Bergelmir and his unnamed wife. Seeing the approaching wave, the wise Bergelmir did not act like the rest of his relatives, he did not flee to the mountains or hide in caves. He and his wife boarded their ship, made of a flour drawer, and took the helm. For many days the waves tossed the boat until it carried it to the ends of the world and set it on a lonely rock. The water began to recede, finally receding to its former limits, revealing the broken lands. Bergelmir looked around the area - rugged, mountainous, but just perfect for the Thurs, its inaccessible ridges effectively defended against the water and the wrath of the descendants of the Burr. He decided to take this land and then pass it on to his descendants. From Bergelmir and his wife comes the Second Generation of Giants. The Thurs spread throughout Jótunnheim, reached Hrimthursheim, then sailed to Muspellheim, and even broke into Midgard in a few places. All the lands where they settled we call Utgard. Since the time of the Deluge, the giants have been implacable enemies of the gods, blaming them for the extinction of their kinsmen of the First Generation. Were it not for the flood, the whole earth would be inhabited by almighty giants. And so they must hide from divine and human sorcery.
