There are several ways to classify the zodiac signs that help us understand them better. These are known as dualities, triplicities and quadruplicities.

Dualities
Under dualities, the signs are grouped in twos. Here the signs are classified as being either masculine or feminine. Masculine signs are outgoing, expressive/assertive, with a tendency toward extroversion. They are all about projecting to the world, putting the individual out there in some way. Masculine signs are said to have a positive polarity.

Feminine signs are more introverted, internal and receptive. They tend to be passive and "held back" in some way. Feminine signs are said to have a negative polarity. Some Astrologers associate masculine signs with Yang and feminine signs with Yin. In Chinese philosophy, Yang is the masculine and active principle while Yin is the receptive and feminine principle.

Masculine and feminine signs alternate as you move through the zodiac. Aries is a masculine sign while Taurus is a feminine sign. Gemini which follows Taurus is masculine while Cancer which follows Gemini is feminine.

You skip one sign to get go the next sign in the same duality. Therefore, Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius are masculine signs. Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces are feminine signs.

You can also note that signs that are opposite each other on the zodiac wheel are in the same duality. Aries and Libra are opposite signs and both are masculine. Taurus and Scorpio are opposite signs and both are feminine. Gemini and Sagittarius are masculine; Cancer and Capricorn are feminine; Leo and Aquarius are masculine and finally Virgo and Pisces are feminine.

Triplicities
Triplicity implies a grouping of threes. In Astrology, triplicity refers to the grouping of zodiac signs based on their elements. There are other ways to group the signs into triplicities but these will not be discussed in this lesson.

There are four elements which make up the soul in addition to the ether (from which all of existence emanates including the four elements). This is reflected in the zodiac. These four elements are associated with the zodiac signs. The traits of a given element are heavily expressed in the signs that they are associated with.

To understand the elements and their respective traits better, read the following links from the Joy of Satan website.

Earth

Fire

Water
https://www.satanisgod.org/www.angelfire.com/empire/serpentis666/Invoking_Water.html

The signs ruled by the fire element are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius.

The signs ruled by the water element are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.

The signs ruled by the air element are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius.

The signs ruled by the earth element are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn.

The precise order is fire, earth, air and water. So Aries is a fire sign, Taurus is an earth sign, Gemini is an air sign and Cancer is a water sign. Leo repeats the cycle as a fire sign, followed by Virgo which is an earth sign, followed by Libra which is an air sign and finally Scorpio which is a water sign. Sagittarius is a fire sign, Capricorn is an earth sign, Aquarius is an air sign and Pisces is a water sign.

If you take signs in the same element like the fire signs, you will notice that they are four signs apart. Take Aries and Leo. If you consider from the starting point of Aries to the starting point of Leo, you will have moved four signs or 120°. 120° in Astrology is called a trine which we will cover in future lessons.

Likewise, Sagittarius is four signs apart from where Leo begins and four signs from the starting point of Aries. That is, take Sagittarius itself, then Capricorn the second sign, then Aquarius and finally Pisces the fourth sign. Immediately where Pisces ends is where Aries begins.

Therefore, zodiac signs in the same element are four signs or what we call a trine (120°) apart. Remember each sign is 30° wide so 30×4 gives the 120°.

When you understand the traits of the elements as explained in the links listed above, you can easily understand some of the traits of the zodiac signs as we will see in a later section of the lesson.

Lastly on elements, fire and air signs are masculine while water and earth signs are feminine. This is because fire signs are usually opposite air signs while water signs are always opposite earth signs on the zodiac wheel and this is the same case for signs in the same polarity. Aries and Libra are opposite signs, fire and air while also being masculine. Likewise, Cancer and Capricorn are opposite signs belonging to water and earth respectively while being feminine signs.

Quadruplicities
From the name, it implies a grouping of zodiac signs into fours. Under this, we look at what we call modality. There are three modes (also known as qualities) which are cardinal, fixed and mutable.

Cardinal signs are self starting, driven, ambitious, good at beginning new projects. The cardinal mode is a bit similar to the fire element. The cardinal signs are Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. Cardinal signs are also extremely important as they are the zodiac signs that mark the equinoxes and solstices.

Aries corresponds to the Spring Equinox as the Sun enters Aries on this day. The Sun enters Cancer on the Summer Solstice, Libra on the Fall Equinox and Capricorn on the Winter Solstice.

Although cardinal signs are good at beginning new projects, they may not necessarily finish what they have begun. This is a trait belonging to fixed signs.

From the name, fixed signs have a strong emphasis on maintaining things. This has to do with a need for security and things being reliable and not prone to changes or upsets. Fixed signs have a lot of endurance and lasting power. They can be stubborn and unyielding.

Fixed signs often get things done as they finish whatever is started. Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius are the fixed signs. The fixed mode has some similarities with the earth element.

Lastly we have mutable signs. The word mutable is an adjective that means "prone to change" and has a Latin root, "mutabilis", which means "changeable". Even the word "mutation" shares the same root. Mutable signs lack lasting power or the dynamic of cardinal signs to begin projects and embrace new beginnings. Rather, they enjoy changes and varying conditions.

Mutable signs are easily changeable and go with the flow. They lack stability and endurance. They are best suited for situations that are unpredictable or temporary. Very versatile and adaptable. The mutable quality is a bit similar to the air element. Mutable signs generally don't need a sense of security in the way of life being ordered like fixed signs that dislike changes. Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces are the mutable signs.

Wrapping it all together
As we have seen, each sign is masculine or feminine, is ruled by a certain element and belongs to a certain mode. The following table illustrates this.

Aries
Aries is a fire sign that has a cardinal modality and is also masculine. From being masculine, Aries is an outgoing, assertive, extroverted sign. This also is from the fire element which in addition to that makes Aries bold, courageous, reckless, daring, restless, self-centered, passionate, driven, impulsive and all the other fire traits.

The cardinal mode shows that Aries is self-starting, proactive, good at being in charge but gets bored easily. It also makes for ambition. Aries tends to start projects on a high note but may struggle with following them through to the end, especially if they are long term projects. This isn't too severe as with mutable signs however especially since Aries as a fire sign tends to be passionate and driven which can make up for the lack of endurance.

Taurus
Taurus is a feminine sign ruled by earth and belonging to the fixed quality/mode. As a feminine sign, Taurus tends to be reserved and in control of the actions. As an earth sign, material possessions and money are important to this sign. Taurus usually requires stability and security, things being ordered and a sense of structure. Taurus is practical and very good at planning.

Since this is also a fixed sign, this sign is often good at following through with plans, routines, and related things. Going back to earth, Taurus is slow (especially since it lacks the action packed cardinal quality), cautious, practical and unlikely to embrace new circumstances. The fixed quality also emphasizes the focus on maintaining things and present structures/situations. Taurus being both an earth and fixed sign has immense endurance and lasting power.

Gemini
Gemini is an air sign that is also masculine and has a mutable quality. As a masculine sign, Gemini is outgoing, extroverted, easily sociable and other related traits. As an air sign, Gemini is communicative, intellectual, objective, logical and emotionally detached. Very impractical, Gemini can do things in a very unpredictable way (air is impractical). Gemini loses interest quickly as it is an air and mutable sign (both are easily changeable). Like the wind, here now and gone the next moment. Gemini is unreliable, easily changeable and adaptable.

Gemini enjoys new experiences and a sense of variety as a mutable sign. Gemini also tends to be quick as it is an air sign. It doesn't do well in situations requiring patience, deliberate action or following a plan. Gemini can also be versatile and skilled or educated in numerous fields as it is very curious as an air sign and is always trying something new as a mutable sign. However it is very rare for this sign to achieve mastery in something as it lacks depth, endurance and patience which are key in mastering something. Gemini lacks focus as an air and mutable sign.

Cancer
Cancer is a cardinal sign that is feminine and ruled by water. The water element gives a tendency toward being timid. However, the cardinal quality shows that Cancer has some sort of balance in that regard. Cancer is a less timid water sign due to being a cardinal sign. As a feminine sign, Cancer is a bit reserved and can tend toward ntroversion. However this is also not too severe since it is a cardinal sign.

As a water sign, Cancer is very sensitive. Emotions can often drive the actions. Cancer has good intuition and can also be very psychic. It also gets easily emotionally attached. For this reason, Cancer can easily get insecure as letting go of things is hard and this can go along with fear of loss. Emotional security is very important to this sign and other water signs.

Cancer can also be empathetic as a water sign and is a caring sign. As a cardinal sign, Cancer can be good at getting things done. The cardinal quality gives the ability to be self-initiative though this is a bit watered down in Cancer as a water sign. This is because the element associated with this trait is fire and water is the opposite of fire.

Leo
Leo is a fire sign that is also masculine and has a fixed quality. As a masculine sign, Leo is outgoing, assertive and extroverted. This is also shown by the fire element. Fire also makes Leo creative, bold, fearless, daring and competitive. The fixed quality shows that Leo has a lot of lasting power in addition to being good at starting projects (fire).

The combination of the fixed quality and fire element shows that Leo can make a fierce opponent as it is very passionate and also doesn't quit easily. Fire gives a strong will and desire to achieve which when combined with the enduring fixed quality gives a good combination. The fire element also gives Leo a good sense of taking charge of things. It also makes for a sense of being self-centered like Aries.

Virgo
Virgo is an earth sign that is feminine and has a mutable quality. The combination of the endurance oriented earth element and the easily changeable mutable quality shows that Virgo is neither a strongly unreliable sign nor a strongly enduring sign but is somewhere in between.

As a feminine sign, Virgo is reserved and in control of the actions. Earth makes Virgo materialistic and diligent. Virgo is concerned with making money. This sign is also practical as an earth sign and can often get things done. The earth element helps balance the mutable tendency to leave a trail of unfinished business. Earth makes Virgo deliberate, good at planning and following the plans along as well as routines and schedules. Earth also has a strong connection with the material and the physical body so Virgo is often concerned with things like health and hygiene. The same applies for other earth signs.

The mutable quality shows that unlike other earth signs, Virgo can adapt to new situations with relative ease.

Libra
Libra is an air sign that is masculine and has a cardinal quality. As a masculine sign, Libra is easily sociable and extroverted. Air also shows the sociable nature as air is the most social element. As an air sign, Libra is usually cool and collected emotionally. Libra can be detached from a situation it is involved in and is known for its ability to be impartial.

Libra is good at communication as well. This sign can be very good at persuasion and convincing people of something, a trait related to communication (ruled by air). As a cardinal sign, Libra is usually driven and can be good at beginning new projects though as an air sign it may lack the endurance needed to finish through with whatever was begun.

Scorpio
Scorpio is a water sign. It is also a fixed sign and feminine. As a feminine sign, Scorpio tends toward introversion. Scorpio is known to be secretive more than any other sign and part of it has to do with being a feminine sign. As a water sign, Scorpio gets attached easily and since it's also a fixed sign, the attachment can be very deep and long lasting. Scorpio feels deeply and is a sensitive sign like other water signs. This sign is also very psychic.

Scorpio has much endurance and lasting power as a fixed sign. Especially with water which rules the emotions and feelings being combined with the fixed quality, the feelings are very consistent. Even things like grudges can be held for a long time. Detaching is also hard for Scorpio.

Sagittarius
Sagittarius is a masculine sign. It is also a fire sign and has a mutable quality. As a masculine sign, Sagittarius is outgoing and extroverted.. The fire element combined with the masculine nature of this sign makes for a love for activity, stimulation and a sense of being out there. Sagittarius is known to love adventure and especially since it is a mutable sign, the mutable quality makes for a need for variety and new experiences in how the fiery energies are expressed.

Sagittarius gets bored easily and can not tolerate monotony. The combination of fire and mutable shows a strong need for excitement/stimulation (fire) and new activities (mutable quality). This is why this sign is known to have a nervous temperament with a lot of restlessness.

Capricorn
Capricorn is an earth sign and a cardinal sign. It is also a feminine sign. As a feminine sign, Capricorn is usually introverted and withdrawn. This sign is known for being collected and reserved and this partly has to do with being a feminine sign. As an earth sign, Capricorn is materialistic. The combination of the energy packed cardinal quality and materialistic earth element makes for a very pronounced materialistic nature in this sign. Money, material possessions, financial security and all related things are very important to this sign.

Capricorn is very ambitious as a cardinal sign and the earth element adds a lasting quality which makes a great combination for achieving material success. This sign being an earth sign has much endurance. The cardinal quality also shows that Capricorn can be good at taking charge of things and being in a leadership position.

As an earth sign Capricorn is practical and realistic. Earth dislikes changes and so Capricorn like other earth signs (expect Virgo which is mutable and can cope better) needs an environment that provides a sense of security and things being ordered and reliable. Capricorn like other earth signs is also good at making plans and being organized.

Aquarius
Aquarius is an air sign. It is masculine and has a fixed quality. Aquarius is outgoing and extroverted as a masculine sign. Being an air sign, Aquarius enjoys changing environments and this makes it a unique fixed sign as it is not a sign that can stay in the same environment or routine for too long. There are other reasons why Aquarius isn't a typical fixed sign aside from being an air sign but we will cover these in another lesson.

Air signs are prone to changes and so they dislike being tied down in any way. This gives the idea of being freedom loving and this is true for air signs including Aquarius. As a fixed sign, Aquarius can do better than other air signs like Gemini when it comes to completing projects. Like other fixed signs, this sign is also very stubborn and does not give up easily.

Aquarius is also very social like other air signs. It is one of the most social signs. Air also makes this sign emotionally detached with a tendency to be cool-headed.

Pisces
Pisces is a feminine sign. It is ruled by the water element and has a mutable quality. As a feminine sign, Pisces is introverted. The combination of being a water, feminine and mutable sign makes for a very timid, shy and introverted nature for this sign. Unlike the cardinal quality which can give much dynamic to a sign and the fixed quality which can give some strength in the way of enduring and being tough, the mutable quality is "impressionable" and easy to impose changes upon. Pisces is known to be quite a weak sign because of all the above. Taken alone, the mutable quality also lacks energy and dynamic which makes for the above.

Remember that all water signs are already feminine but Cancer is a cardinal sign and Scorpio is a fixed sign. Pisces is the mutable water sign which is why it is the weakest.

As a water sign, Pisces is very sensitive. Water also makes Pisces very psychic and intuitive.

Like other water signs, Pisces not only feels deeply but can also feel the feelings of others which makes for much empathy (Pisces is impressionable on many levels including emotionally, that is to say that other's emotions can easily leave an impression on this sign). This sign is known to be compassionate due to this ability to easily pick up on other's feelings and feel them as its own..

Pisces can tend toward laziness and passiveness due to the lack of fire and the cardinal quality. This sign tends to prefer passive activities and rest.

In conclusion, just knowing the properties of the signs can help one understand much about them. This is a good way to begin to understand the zodiac signs.

A good exercise I can recommend is to take time to understand the polarities, elements and modalities/qualities. Read and internalize on each classification a sign can fall under. Within each classification, understand the traits of each element, quality and polarity. After this, try and list all the possible traits you can come up with for each sign based on your understanding of the various ways the signs are classified.

If Aries is a fire sign, from your understanding of fire, what traits can this sign have? What about as a masculine sign? What about having the cardinal quality? How about when you blend the traits of fire and masculine signs, or masculine signs and carinal signs? What new traits can you come up with? What about all three combined?

This will help you understand the various traits of the zodiac signs and it won't be jargon to you anymore. If we take Aries as an example again, you now understand that Aries has traits like being bold, reckless and daring from being a combination of three action packed classifications namely a masculine sign, fire sign and cardinal sign

The next lesson will cover the various forms of Astrology as well as more information about the zodiac signs.

-Blackdragon666

I should add that signs in the same quality are three signs or 90° apart. This is called a square and will be covered in future lessons.

This also makes for what we call quadrants. Quadrants divide the zodiac into four parts. From Aries to Gemini is the first quadrant. Cancer to Virgo makes the second quadrant. Libra to Sagittarius makes the third quadrant and Capricorn to Pisces makes the fourth quadrant. Each quadrant has a cardinal, fixed and mutable sign.

This is a great overview boiling down the essence of the signs. It's really about understanding how energies are expressed and interact, this is the key to moving on to higher levels of Astrological interpretation.

Earth

Water
https://www.satanisgod.org/www.angelfire.com/empire/serpentis666/Invoking_Water.html

Although I deleted my previous comment under this post, I think it would be a good idea if you analyzed a complete random birth chart in a separate post, I think it could learn a lot from it.

Air
https://www.satanisgod.org/www.angelfire.com/empire/serpentis666/Invoking_Air.html

Earth
https://www.satanisgod.org/www.angelfire.com/empire/serpentis666/Invoking_Earth.html

Fire
https://www.satanisgod.org/www.angelfire.com/empire/serpentis666/Invoking_Fire.html

Water
https://www.satanisgod.org/www.angelfire.com/empire/serpentis666/Invoking_Water.html

Thanks, this is very helpful :D

With your lessons so far you have not shown me much new, because I mastered astrology(or large part of astrology) a long time ago.But I could have learned more astrology, but I stopped because of other things. But nevertheless I will continue to read your other astrology articles.

You had commented on another article that was posted by HP HoodeedCobra and said a similar thing "You did not tell me anything new"...

If you have nothing of value to say, then don't say anything at all.

Hey Blackdragon, when I started learning astrology I'd have liked to see charts with single aspects only, like the square, trine, semi square, sextile, inconjunct, yod, to see what they properly looked like.

Now we have the website that explains all the degrees (aspects+description of what that aspect does) which is awesome and really helps.

I even found something I was missing in my chart before through using the new website.

Do you think you could cover that here or somehow get that added onto azazels astrology under "how to read a chart" ?

You didn't see?Other than that I wrote also him a word of praise.https://ancient-forums.com/viewtopic.php?p=385320#p385320

And btw, probably there is no one but me who would have written as much praise for HP as I have.

And I can write not only(just) praise. ;)

And sometimes it's good to say that even the great Satanists have nothing new to show me,Which is of course rare, but it does happen. ;)

Awesome, I have a better time understanding this then the movements of the planets and starts themselves, I dont know why. As soon as math and angles are thrown in I lose track
