Some of you may have noticed, but the enemy decided to attack Protonmail at this time. From the way the website is acting, it looks like a form of DDoS attack.

Not only do a lot of us use Protonmail for its secure and anonymous communication, a lot of other high profile people do as well.

Clearly the enemy wishes to disrupt anonymous and secure communication in whatever way they can, which includes to disrupt our means of secure communication as SS.

If anyone does have a few alternatives in mind, it would be useful for all of us to have alternative means ready at times like this, since no service can be 100% reliable especially if the enemy truly intents to shut down communication lines across the globe.

It's possible this has to do with this notification from Protonmail

Global ProtonVPN infrastructure reboot campaign

For the next few weeks, as part of our continuous effort to maintain the optimal performance and security of our servers, we will be performing an upgrade and reboot campaign of all our VPN servers. This will require each VPN server exit to be set into maintenance mode for brief periods of time. We apologise for the inconvenience, and will share updates once the upgrade campaign is complete.


However the sort of interruption of service that is currently happening doesn't appear to be what they described in the notification above.

Even if it is a temporary issue related to this infrastructure update, it is disruptive nonetheless especially at timings like these, and enough reason to keep a few backup services in mind to fall back on.

We are currently investigating some upstream network issues which are preventing some users from connecting to ProtonMail. If you are impacted, using u/ProtonVPN may resolve the issue. We are working on rerouting around the problematic networks.

I have had some issues with my SS account, which is the only one I use through a VPN. I had no issues with the other accounts, though.

Briar seems to be an excellent option. I came across this app recently. It works only on android though.
