Don’t give away critical information by having leaky DNS!
DNS servers tell your device what IP address is associated with any given domain. For example, “example.com” translates to 93.184.216.34. Obviously, the domain name is much easier to remember thus, DNS. These DNS servers know the “when” and “where” of all of your browsing activity. Don’t give them information by having a DNS leak! Check for DNS leaks using https://dnsleaktest.com
You can set your DNS in your router settings and most VPNs that are worth anything will automatically set this up for you which you may or may not want.
Note: There can be issues of DNS leaks at that moment before you successfully connect to your VPN provider so keep that in mind. Best to wait until fully connected before you do anything opsec worthy. Also, there are a number of privacy-minded DNS servers that you may use freely.
