Bhastrika The Most Important Pranayama For Kundalini Yoga
Bhastrika The Most Important Pranayama For Kundalini Yoga
The Bhastrika pranayama is stated to be the most important pranayama in Kundalini yoga. The instructions on this method from advanced texts mention its purpose is to send the energy into the Shakti nadi the sushumna and open all the major knots the Rudra knot is the lower pelvic area of the Muladhara and Swadhisthana chakras and the Vishnu knot at the Manipura chakra and the Brahma knot at the Ajna chakra. This pranayama is stated to be for awakening the Kundalini and moving the Kundalini upwards to the crown.
The two methods used with this is the mula banda which moves the energy into the Shakti nadi and the Kriya that one focuses on the tip of the nose which as mentioned is altered from where one should focus the middle under part of the nose between the opening of the two nostrils. This is the Shakti nadi activation point and this Kriya which was kept hidden for this reason as this causes both nostrils to fully open and the energy of the breath to move into the Shakti nadi this nadi is called the wedding of the sun and moon basically in the east for this reason. Where the energy of the sun and moon nadis are united. To make this more powerful the proper Kechari mundra with the tongue on the roof of the mouth with the tip behind the two front teeth should be applied.
On the hold one can also apply the Maha Banda the root, navel and chin lock are all made together as the texts also mention.
This practice generates a flow of purifying spiritual fire through the sushumna nadi the Shakti nadi which transforms the soul for the raising of the Kundalini. This opens this nadi and sends the purifying spiritual fire through all the chakras and the male and female nadis while generating the power in the Shakti nadi of the sun and moon to raise the serpent. This pranayama is also stated to destroy all impurities in the body. This is why the methods mentioned here were removed and watered down to remove the power of this practice as the number one method for Kundalini yoga.
Perform this practice with care and don't over do it. Its powerful. You are responsible for how you use such to yourself.

Re: Bhastrika The Most Important Pranayama For Kundalini Yoga
First I'm already doing this for months lol the only thing is that I didn't concentrate on the middle of the nose but now that I know I will do it. So for anyone that is confuse you basically do the Breath of Fire when you have to hold along with doing the Root lock and the Chin Lock you do the Navel Lock (basically you push your navel up) and of course while you are doing the Breath of Fire you concentrate on the middle of the nostrils and the Kechari mudra.
Re: Bhastrika The Most Important Pranayama For Kundalini Yoga
I forgot to say that the only difference in this pranayama that unlike Breath of Fire where the inhalation is passive in this pranayama it's not. I really don't know how else to explain it but you can easily find on Videos on Google that explain how to do Bhastrika.
Re: Bhastrika The Most Important Pranayama For Kundalini Yoga
I believe that a clear and concise instruction on this would be really helpful.HP Mageson666 wrote:...
From what I understand, it would be:
1. While focusing on the columella of the nose, perform the mula bandha (root lock).
2. While still doing both of the above, breathe in for a set amount of time.
3. At the end of the inhale, lower the chin to the chest, and apply the maha bandha (root, navel, and chin lock combined).
4. Hold for a set amount of time (as much as is comfortable).
5. Release the locks and exhale slowly.
Is this be how it should be done? Or alternatively, should the locks be applied while inhaling, rather than after the inhale is finished?
Also, I looked into mula bandha (root lock) and the first site I saw said you do it by contracting the perineum, rather than by contracting the anus. I don't know of any official statements from the clergy regarding how to correctly perform these locks.
Here the pages I read for reference. I quoted the relevant parts to save you time. Perhaps you could skim over them and let me know whether the instructions there are correct or not.
Mula Bandha: https://yogayukta.com/876/mula-bandha-t ... dications/
Mula Bandha wrote:Now slowly contract the pelvic floor muscles, and pull them up slightly. Hold the lock, but do not overstrain. This is the final position.
...
The pelvic floor muscles should be strained well, but not over-strained. You shouldn’t feel too much discomfort during the practice.
To end the root lock practice, relax the pelvic floor muscles, slowly raise your head and exhale.
Uddiyana Bandha: http://www.yogicwayoflife.com/uddiyana- ... inal-lock/
Uddiyana Bandha wrote:Contract the abdominal muscles and pull it inside and upwards. Feel as if there is a suction from a point just behind the sternum. This will enable the abdomen to go fully inside pressing all the abdominal organs against the back wall of the spine.
Hold the lock with the breath for as long as you are comfortable. One can start with few seconds.
...
To release the lock, first release the abdominal muscles. Then bring the shoulders back to normal position, release the chin lock and exhale.
Jalandhara Bandha: https://www.yogicwayoflife.com/jalandha ... chin-lock/
Jalandhara Bandha wrote:Contract the throat muscles and bend the head forward so that the chin touches the chest. Adjust the chin position so that it rests between the two collar bones in the pit of the throat.
...
To release the lock, [...] raise your head and exhale out.
The maha bandha in this case would be combining all 3 of the above locks together, provided that the versions above are legit and not corrupted.
Also, if these are the legitimate versions, then I assume there is no need to contract the anus at all in this exercise? From what I know, doing this sends energy upwards through the spine, which should theoretically be beneficial here.
I would love to do this exercise at it's most powerful level, and without any annoying corruptions or other bullshit. From what has currently been said about it, I believe that it's still very easy to do this exercise incorrectly in one way or another.

Thanks a lot for the information, High Priest. Just a couple of questions though:
So we apply all the 3 locks (presumably on the hold as usual) and focus on the tip of our nose rather than the piece of skin between the two nostrils during the inhale. Is that right?
What about the inhalation itself? Any special techniques to it or just breathing deep like with the yogic breath?
Good day to you.

While focusing on the M part of the nose,,, what would happen if one visualizes white/gold light, or the Fire element going from the front of the face, into the M part of the nose, into the head, then down the spine to the base chakra,,, and even down into the earth.?
And reversing this process, sending Red fire, ( or orange, yellow, etc. ) up the spine and out the M part of the nose.
Then alternating these two techniques for several times .?
What about vibrating this M part of the nose with a certain sound, vibration ?

You just contract your anus. It's tomato/tomato, the muscles that contract the perineum are the ones that also contract the anus. It's also the same muscles that lets you hold your bladder before you go to the bathroom.
The thing I'm wondering about is if you let go of the root lock or keep it held before you apply the maha bandha. It makes sense to keep it held for the entire duration of the practice.
1. Columella, mudra, then root lock
2. Breathe in, continue the root lock
3. Hold (while still maintaining root lock)
4. Keep doing the root lock, then start the chin and navel lock
5. Release all the locks
6. Exhale
In my opinon, that's the straightforward way of doing it.

Fire should be avoided for the head and face, let alone the brain or nervous system.

Many people are not that advanced. As HPS Maxine said, best to avoid running the fire element through the Brain and Heart areas.
So too everyone,,, "At your own risk".

Actually I think this one makes more sense...
Bhastrika:
1. Kechari Mudra
2. Inhale in and hold
3. Maha bandha
4. Hold
5. Relax everything then exhale
In your opinion, which is the more plausible method? This makes more sense to me.
The second way I posted makes sense to breathe in THEN apply the locks, because breathing in allows for the energy to enter, then holding all the locks allows for the energy facilitate the transformation process. It's also more seamless, as for now I can't think of a reason of beginning with a lock.
In the advanced kevala, it's the same:
1. Kevala mudra
2. Inhale
3. Hold and Moola bandha
4. Relax and exhale.

I apologize as my speculative thoughts here has caused more confusion, and raises more questions than answers.

Yes they are different.
Bhastrika is means bellows, so you force the inhale and exhale.* Then you stop to perform the bandhas.
*I also had some confusion as to what differentiates the bhastrika from the kapalbhati (shining skull)...
shining skull. The breath of fire focuses more on the exhalation and using the abdominal muscles to forcefully contract. Meanwhile the bhastrika requires you to force air in and out with just your lungs using diaphragmatic breathing. Generally. Is this correct or is this a corruption?

Do not apologize for using your brain and theorizing on something with the aim of making it easier to understand. I think many members here are/were unsure about how exactly to do this breath correctly. Raising more questions than answers is what ultimately leads to discussion and answers in itself. It's only bad when it's done to distract from a more important point at hand, and/or with the sole intention of wasting people's time, which in my opinion is not the case here.94n wrote:I apologize as my speculative thoughts here has caused more confusion, and raises more questions than answers.![]()
I have never heard of any breath where you force the inhale as well. The only part in any breathing exercise where something is "forced" is with the exhale in the breath of fire, from what I know atleast. I've never heard of a "forceful inhalation".94n wrote:Yes they are different.
