Can I use acupuncture needles on myself? Do I have to lay motionless, or can I sit (depending on the points used)? Does this approach make sense, to begin with?

No, since acupuncture is done on the back how do you intend to stick it in, also since your not a specialist you may not know the dept in which you should go or how long it last. In acupuncture you need to lay down which brings relaxation and helps with the process. Its impossible to stick it when you lying down
Really? But there are many points in legs, arms and front side of torso, not to forget the head. And the depth of insertion can be found from online.

Yes you can do this and be sitting or working on something. It might disturb the effect somewhat, but you should be able to feel a difference regardless.

Just be careful and also remember that acupuncture doesn't necessarily aid vitality to our body/soul, rather it mainly distributes it into weak spots. The only point that can be said to add energy is Stomach 36, as we talked about earlier.

The main points that I would suggest for any head phlegm problems would be LI 11 and GB 20. LI 11 drains heat and phlegm in general, whereas GB 20 drains the head of all pathogens.

Edit: I would recommend acupressure, not acupuncture, with actual needles.

Yes, I am aware. I have heat, and possibly damp and phlegm related issues. I have been using spleen, kidney and liver meridian points lately and some others also when I was going through sinusitis couple of weeks ago.

Thank you for the suggestions on points. There are so many and I do not know them all, and not certainly all by heart.

Acupuncture is certainly useful on the self, provided you can do points accessible without hurting when returning to a natural pose.

I did this a great deal when studying, and preferred a seated pose over a laying pose.

Phlegm of the upper burner can be addressed with the following point combination:

Stomach 40
Triple Burner 6
Ren 17
Ren 12
GB34

It is OK to do needles unilaterally to save having both arms caught up with needles.

Insertion should be slow and thoughtful, and once needles are in, a microcosmic orbit can help circulate energy throughout the meridians.

I have never seen acupunture been done on the leg before but Ok.
For example: http://www.acupuncture.com/education/points/index.htm

Thank you very much.

I wish to share my experiences and something important I learned fro my TCM doctor.

It can be very dangerous you can prick internal organs that may lead to lethal or very hard surcumstances. There are rules on how deep what point should be pricked. The depth is measured in so called "individual cun" - please see below what it is.

Cun - is a very unic measure that can very much vary from person to person. Some points allow just up to 0,5 cun while cun is "individual". Cun can be "proportional" (from umbicilus to xiphoid process - 8 cun) and "individual" (distance between the skin folds of the bent third finger of the hand). So they both are individual just called differently. For the location of the acupoint you use proportinal cun, while for the depth of the pricking you use individual cun. Also whether a person is very thin or very fat should also be taken into consideration. You have to be very careful with the individual cun of the extremely thin people.

1 and 2 – 1 cun; 3 – 11/2 cun; 4 – 3 cun

For example, the middle line of the abdomen (Ren May chennel) is mostly to be pricked up to 0,5 individual cun. It is very little with thin people, and you must follow it strictly or you may prick the organs. Now below I wish to share my experience.

I tried and I found that the needle is extremely thin while the skin on legs and belly or most places you might try to prick except hands is very thick, but only outer layers of the skin. So I literally could not prick it for several minutes. But when I DID prick it automatically went too deep before I had time to stop the force. The inner layers are very soft and the needle easily goes through and can easily prick the internal organs such as the bladder. When I was trying using all my force to prick the outer layers I caught it too late when it ran through. It runs deep and very quickly before a person manages to stop force apply, also the needle is so thin that it is painless and bloodless when it runs in the deeper layers, also it runs very quickly, which means nothing can stop your force apply except your knowledge and mastery. Happily those points I tried allowed up to 1-2 individual cun depth to prick, but some points (most of which I needed to prick) are allowing only 0,5 individual cun depth or one can prick the organs, so newbies will have problems using them on the belly. My TCM doctor told me that in China they have academies where they learn to prick. One must take a pack of paper and train to prick on them. this trains fingers to prick the thick outer layers of the skin so that the force used is not too much and quickly stops so that the needle does not go further. He advised me to prick only hands and legs while I learn as this is safer for newbies.

He meant it should be done daily like putting in front of you a pack of printer paper and try to prick it with a thin TCM needle. It is meant to teach you to control your power and make your fingers more powerful to prick the outer layer of skin which is very hard to prick. He also said something like you should kinda twist or curl the needle while pricking and that acupoint should kinda hurt when pricked appropriately on the outer skin layers.

Thank you for your concern. I actually studied about this and know what cun is and how deep to insert the needle.
