What are the Chakras? The term chakra is actually Sanskrit for Wheel. For anyone who is a little confused as to what they are, they are centres of the body...energy centres if you want to use an easier term. These energy centres relate to certain parts/sections of our body. Each chakra has a specific energy pattern, for example, the root chakra has Kundalini energy, which is often referred to as sexual energy.
How many Chakras are there? There are seven major chakras in our body, however, this does not mean that they are the only ones. Over each part of our body are energy points, and these are minor chakras, yet, there are so many of them, it is much harder to categorise them all with specific properties, meanings and attributes.
So what are the Seven Major Chakras? The seven major chakras run from bottom of the body, to the top; Root Chakra Sacral Chakra Solar Plexus Chakra Heart Chakra Throat Chakra Third Eye Chakra Crown Chakra With all Chakras, each of these reigns over different areas of the body, they affect different aspects of our lives, our organs and are attributed to certain types of energy.
The Root Chakra This chakra is located at the base of ones spine, and it is the centre of sexual energy, as stated above, the Kundalini. It is represented with the colour red, the symbol of a serpent and reigns over the element of Earth. One thing must be understood about the Root Chakra, it is a very powerful chakra, to try and open it, or meditate on it, without proper guidance or understanding could be hazardous to ones own health. This is not to say do not try to open this chakra, but be aware of how much energy there is and how powerful it can be.
The Sacral Chakra The sacral is located at the lower abdomen, between the navel and the genitalia. Its purpose is for emotional connection and teaching oneself to let go of control over some issues. It is represented with the colour of orange/red-orange and is said to be the vortex of change, emotion, pleasure and movement. The Sacral Chakra is known to reign over the element of water, thus the reason for its location, psychological and symbolic connections.
The Solar Plexus Chakra This chakra is located above the navel, in approximation to the diaphragm, and is said to be the centre of transformation. It is stated to deal with the aspects of self-esteem, energy, and willpower. It is represented with the colour yellow and is associated with the element of Fire.
The Heart Chakra This is located in the heart area and is the centre of balance, love, compassion, healing and unity. It is said to be the termination point of the sacral spine and the intersection point of the balance point. It is represented by the colour green the element of Air is connected to this centre point.
The Throat Chakra This is the centre for sound, vibration and communication while Mantras and the acts of telepathy and creativity are associated with this chakra. It is represented by the light shade of blue and has an association with the Akashic Element and has the vibrational frequency of sound.
The Third Eye Chakra This chakra is located between the eyebrows and is the centre of intuition, imagination, visualistion, clairvoyance and vision. It is believed to be connected with the Pineal Gland and is said to be the "Seat of the Soul" In regards to vibrational meditation, its vibrational frequency is that of light, therefore, it is attuned to the same element and is represented by the colour of Liliac.
The Crown Chakra This is located just above the head and is the centre of consciousness and transcendence. It is called the "Seat of Enlightenment" and is the element of knowing Due to the association and function of knowing this chakra reigns over the element of Thought and is often represented with the colour white or a very pale lavender.
