From what I know, it is not good to drink lots of water or any beverage before a meal because it dilutes the digestive and stomach acids. It is best to separate drinking with eating. I usually drink water or a drink 20-30 mins before a meal or 20-30 minutes afterwards. And when I do drink with a meal, it is with kombucha (has beneficial acids and enzymes and bacteria) or raw milk which has beneficial bacteria and enzymes.
About Magnesium; Magnesium helps with people who have very high acid problems like acid reflux and such. It normalizes and stabilizes it. On the other hand, Magnesium will not be absorbable if you have low stomach acid already such as seniors who take antacids and other drugs. Certain things decrease stomach acid in the body. But for the average person, stomach acid shouldn't be a huge problem. It is important to have normal acid levels in the stomach anyway because magnesium, like many other minerals need acid to form an absorbable salt.
To balance your stomach acid, drink things like kombucha, which is acidic, has enzymes and bacteria thats good for digestion, organic raw milk or organic milk, kefir is good and even drinking water and organic squeezed lemon juice helps with the stomach acid and even taking a good enzyme supplement.
Magnesium is responsible for hundreds of biochemical happenings in the body. Most things are depleted of Magnesium and so it will do nothing but benefit your body. I do not go through menstrual cramps or anything since changing my diet and adding magnesium. Either way I don't worry about taking Magnesium before or with meals. Just make sure you keep your stomach acids at a healthy normal level.
The Magnesium I take as supplementation is in the form of Magnesium citrate or Magnesium glycerinate. This helps with maximum absorption. Vitamin B-6 aids in the absorption.

I personally found it is good to take it in the evening before sleeping, it helps to sleep better.

On the topic of taking things before meals, is it ok to take magnesium before a meal? I thought it would help with absorption but then I read that magnesium neutralizes stomach acid so probably wouldn't be good to take with meals?
