Returning curses does just that, returns curses. Imagine if somebody throws a snowball at you, you return it right back at the sender.
Freeing of the soul does just that, frees your soul. If there are any restrictions in your life that you want to get rid of, you do the freeing of the soul. Or removing negative karma and so on.
